Posted on CNN There is a solar system that resembles ours. Wonder if this is where the vulcans live. Anyone for first contact?

"Newly identified solar system
resembles our own

August 16, 2001 Posted: 1:36 AM EDT (0536 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Astronomers
announced Wednesday the discovery of the first solar
system other than our own where multiple planets travel
around a star in circular orbits.

Of the roughly 70 planets found so far outside our solar
system, most travel in tight, erratic orbits around their stars.

However, the two planets around the star 47 Ursae Majoris
both travel in nearly circular orbits at a distance that, in our
solar system, would place them beyond Mars but within the
orbit of Jupiter.

University of California, Berkeley, astronomers announced the
discovery of the second star on Wednesday. The first was
detected in 1996.

"With 47 Ursae Majoris, it's heartwarming to find a planetary
system that finally reminds us of our solar system," said team
member Geoffrey Marcy, a Berkeley professor of astronomy.

The two planets -- one 21/2 times the size of Jupiter, the other
three-quarters as large -- orbit a star in the Big Dipper, or Ursa
Major, constellation. The star is about 51 light-years from
Earth. "

I believe Vulcan is in the Epsilon Eridani system.

yes it is, and a gas giant was detected there too.

Maybe taldren could start overlaying real star charts with the DV2 (3?) map.

You are correct that in TOS book by James Blish it is mentioned in the "Tomorrow is Yesterday" episode. Then we got the novels going and someone didn't double check their research and it became Epsilon Eridani. There is a gas giant in that system (Epsilon Eridani) but its orbit is highly eccentric lessening the chance for a rocky planet in the life zone with a stable orbit. The 47 UMa system is much more stable so it is more likely but since the gas giants are closer in than in our system a rocky planet orbiting in the life zone is still kind of tricky but it is a lot better than Epsilon Eridani

Nothing says that life has to evolve on the main planets, it could very well evolve on a large moon of one of the Gas Giants if they are in the habitable zone. (Titan anyone? )

More likely Europa, near the bottom of its subteranean ocean.

True Aldaron but the known gas giants are also outside the habitable zone, at least as we understand it.

Vulcans are quite real. Each one is 20 mm and their logic inescapable.

Now why can't giant gas planets give off enough heat to support life on a close moon? We have Jupiter that does it and i think Saturn to a smaller degree. Mmmm is it Jupi with the water/ice moon? What if that turns out to be the next living plantet many many years down the road? How nifty would that be?
Just a thought. I do have them and I can do it with out being naughty about it too! LOL
