Ipswich Town 0-1 Charlton Athletic

A sensational strike five minutes from time from substitute Kevin Lisbie completed a Charlton Athletic smash-and-grab raid over Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

The home side had dominated for long spells with Findi George a constant threat.

But Lisbie's venomous volley from the edge of penalty area gave the Addicks their first win of the season.

Charlton started brightly and they should have opened the scoring after six minutes.

We got ourselves a result and we know there's an awful long way to go for us in our attempts to maintain our Premiership status
Charlton manager Alan Curbishley
Graham Stuart's pass played John Salako through, but he struck his shot straight at Matteo Sereni, who made a fine save.

That escape sparked Ipswich to life and they produced some fantastic flowing football as they dominated the remainder of the half.

The combination of George and Martijn Reuser looked increasingly menacing as the half wore on.

The Nigerian's flicked header was well saved by Dean Kiely after 23 minutes.

Reuser came close himself on the half-hour, when he curled a trademark free kick narrowly over the crossbar.

Richard Rufus leaves the pitch injured
Rufus injured himself in a challenge on Stewart
Charlton's hopes were further hit seconds later when Rufus, who earlier escaped a clear handball in the penalty area, was injured and replaced by Steve Brown.

In the closing stages of the half, George's spectacular curled shot flew just over and Reuser's carbon copy effort was deflected off target by Mark Fish's head.

Two minutes before the break, Kiely denied George by just beating him to Chris Makin's cross.

Charlton again started brightly after the restart, with Scott Parker firing a shot just over from 25 yards after 47 minutes.

Stewart off

Spanish striker Pablo Counago, a replacement for Richard Naylor, put his header just too high from Reuser's cross after 53 minutes.

It was a fantastic goal, but it was poor defending by ourselves and we are frustrated because when you have so much play and possession you expect to get something
Ipswich Town manager George Burley
As the pace slowed in the sweltering Suffolk sunshine, Ipswich withdrew Marcus Stewart with Jim Magilton introduced and George pushed into attack.

But Charlton had briefly halted the Ipswich momentum, and Jason Euell brought a fantastic save from Sereni after 64 minutes.

George set up Canouga minutes later as Ipswich responded but his effort was turned behind.

The home side were made to pay for their profligacy when Lisbie crashed home an unstoppable shot to inflict a second defeat of the season on George Burley's side.
