What is an EVP
Originally called Voice Phenomena in the United Kingdom ( The UK conducted tests on this phenomena when it was first discovered sometime around W.W.II ) and later adapted to Electronic Voice Phenomena in the USA. This type of activity is one of the Investigators most valuable pieces of evidence. If proper measures are taken to ensure the credibility of the EVP, then what is found is truly paranormal.

The History of EVP's is quite unclear before the early 50's because the military on 2 continents were aware of the phenomena and tried to research it but to no avail could not explain what it found. There were certain branches of the Military ( UK & USA ) that had even went to the extremes of setting up projects on Researching this Phenomena. It is believed that because of the Military's extensive research on communication/reanimation of the DEAD, EVP's were being researched as well.

For Information purposes, I am listing some research that the U.S. Military conducted between the years of 1938-1952 ONLY. Shortly you will be able to click on the below links for more information. We are researching this to bring you as much reality as possible by The Freedom of Information Act and First Hand Accounts. Psychic and Scientific Research is being listed and in no way represents all of the types of research that were made.

Common Definition of EVP:

EVP's were first discovered back in the early 50's by scientists, electronics experts, psychologists and enthusiastic amateurs when voices would manifest themselves on ordinary electromagnetic recording tape. After extensive research it was thought that these voices were of people who were dead. It was not only ordinary people who believed this BUT some of the top scientists, psychologists and scholar's in the world!

Equipment Used to Capture EVP's:

Here is a listing of some of the equipment you will need in order to capture EVP's. This list does not give all types because it would be extensive but it will give you the basic tools and concepts for capturing Electronic Voice Phenomena.

( A Rating of 10 Denotes your best chances of capturing the phenomena )

Rating System:

10 - 1 minute of recording produced an EVP every time
05 - 1 minute of recording produced an EVP 1 out of every 50 times
01 - 1 minute of recording produced an EVP 1 out of every 100 times
( The above were conducted in houses / locations that were known to have activity )

How to capture EVP's:

DVDR, it's Members, Chapters and Lou Gentile himself does not condone the act of inexperienced people trying to contact human and especially inhuman spirits with the above devices or any other devices not mentioned. However, due to the fact that there are many Internet web sites that give references on how to do this we WILL tell you how to protect yourself Before AND After! We DO NOT condone this but PLEASE be warned that any kind of contact with spirits can have an impact on your life whether good or bad!

First let me begin by saying there are 3 Basis Category's to get evp's with the above mentioned equipment. There definitions are as follows:

1 - Non-Conversational Contact - This is the most common type of EVP captured. It is when anyone records audio and playback reveals voices or messages that the recorder knows were not there. The location for this type of EVP seems to not matter however the odds go up if they are recorded at a location known to have spirit activity. (I.E.: Haunted House or Location)
2 - Human Spirit Contact - This is common for Ghost Hunters who go to Historical Locations, Graveyards or Haunted Houses/Locations. The Ghost Hunter asks simple Human Spirit Questions and a reply is given by the spirit. This type of EVP can be useful when a Psychic or Medium,etc. is not used and answers are needed to find out the Who,Why and When of a Haunting. Questions could be as seen below on this page BUT are only used for Human Spirits and should NEVER contain anything religious or they will fall into Category 3! To the inexperienced investigator or researcher mixing category 2&3 questions can prove to be a very BAD mistake. A combination of category 2&3 questions by anyone but a trained Religious Demonologist or alike can put yourself and the client into dangers that most could not even conceive.
3 - Religious Provocation Contact - For The Religious Demonologist or his/her student this is the most Dangerous and Confrontational. Using this type of contact with EVP's works extremely well but as I stated is Dangerous and SHOULD NOT be used by ANYONE who does not know how to stop the activity that can come from using it. Because of the sensitive nature of this category I will only tell you this about religious provocation. You need to have a high faith in God, Angels, etc. when using it or it just simply does not work. If you are an Atheist or Agnostic then sorry, it won't work BUT you will have some extreme problems in your life after using it and the reason why is the same reason that an exorcism is usually so effective, FAITH! I could go on and on about the religious aspect of Category 3 but I think I would be taking away from the topic which is EVP's. I cannot say it any simpler that this: DO NOT USE RELIGIOUS PROVOCATION UNLESS YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING OR THE REPERCUSSIONS CAN BE LIFE SHATTERING! Enough Said.

PROTECTING YOURSELF:

This is probably the most hardest thing to explain to anyone about EVP's and the most commonly asked question. How can I Protect myself against bringing these things I am hearing home with me?

The TRUE answer is nobody can tell you exactly what can work. The simple fact is that Category 1 EVP's can occur to anyone at anytime and if that is so then how could you even conceive a protection method. In my opinion Category 1 EVP's are just byproducts of technology and no real means of protection are needed or should be used. Think about it, if I was to tell you that you needed to say a prayer or blessing every time you pressed the record button on any device would literally be insane. However with Category 2 & especially Category 3 that is a little bit different. When going to 2 & 3 we are giving recognition to the spirits and asking them questions, no it is not like the Ouija board because we are not using our bodies as a catalyst (I.E.: hand and Planchette). I WILL NOT be telling you how to protect yourself from Category 3 EVP's because this is knowledge that only a Religious Demonologist or his/her student will get passed down along to them. However the following should be used in order to protect yourself when trying to record Category 2 Human Spirits. The goal here is not to frighten anyone into thinking that if you try to get EVP's on your own something horrible will happen but it is only here to let you know that Spirits attract Spirits and if you are a Ghost Hunter you don't want your work following you home.

PROTECTION METHODS:

People who do not believe in God (Atheist) or want proof that there is a God (Agnostic) need not read below because there is no point. In my opinion, if you need proof there is a God because you are unsure then all the prayers or blessings in the world won't work because you are missing the most important thing, Faith. Sorry! If you believe in God in some form then continue:

BEFORE the recording of Category 2 EVP's: Before recording Cat2 EVP's imagine yourself in an ever encompassing white light. The Light is coming from above you and shining down directly on you. Some people call this a God, Christ, Goddess, Etc. Light and this is considered to be your protection and faith. The Whiter the Light the more faith you have. If you believe in Angels or Spirit Guides then imagine them watching over you and nothing can come between you, your light, your protectors and your faith. Hey, it may sound weird but it works! After you have done that, say a prayer to your God asking Him/Her/It to protect you from anything you may contact. After all, the reality is you will be contacting something but at this point you don't know what. If you believe in St. Michael The Archangel you may say that prayer asking for protection. SAMPLE HUMAN SPIRIT QUESTIONS:

1. Are you a Human Spirit? - If Spirit answers NO then immediately stop and call someone who may know how to handle the rest of the situation. Do not be afraid to do this because if you continue, you may accelerate the activity and cause harm to yourself or most important the client.
2. What is your name?
3. How old are you?
4. When did you die?
5. Why are you here now?

( At this point only ask questions related to humans and nothing about religion at all )

AFTER the recording of Category 2 EVP's : When you are finished asking the questions it is not important to do anything because later on you may think of other questions to ask. It is important that once you leave the property or environment where you were asking these question to do the following. With the property or environment in view ask your God, Goddess, Christ, etc. to not allow any of the spirit's to follow you home whether good or evil. If you want spirits to follow you home then your in the wrong business! You may also say the St. Michael the Archangel Prayer if you believe in him. There is a misconception by people that if you say prayers like that around a house or a property you will bind the spirits there forever but that is not true and comes from people who have a closed mind to religion and the powers it can portray in our lives. At this point still imagine the White Light and Angels or Spirit Guides etc. around you until you walk in your front door. If your house is blessed then the word of God will be enough to repel anything from coming in, If not then get it blessed no matter what religion you are!

I must stress something that has come to my attention. It seems that there are many of groups and organizations out that have no knowledge of the impact spirit's can cause in your life and the dangers that giving recognition to things that don't need it can do. Let me explain and please read the following if it pertains to you:

Groups or Organizations

One common mistake that Ghost Hunting groups & organizations make is by telling there members to go home and take EVP recordings. This is a bad idea. Why? Because if someone has a spirit in there home already then what you are doing is giving recognition to it. By giving it recognition you now turn your member into a client. I have seen this happen over and over again and I must stress to you that this is not a hobby. Playing with the spirit world like an erector set is not only dangerous but foolish. It is fine to have members test equipment and theory's out in the field but please do not have your members take their work home with them. I understand some members can seem Gung-ho about getting evidence but have them do it where everyone is in a group so you can all learn. Once again, please do not have members go into their own home and try their EVP equipment out. You may find that the spirit in that members house might not be Casper and if it is it might not be friendly:) This also goes for clients as well. I have heard clients of mine tell me that before they got in contact with me people were telling them to put a recorder on the bed and talk to the spirit. This is like putting a time bomb on the bed because now the client who has a problem is now fully recognizing the spirit and interacting with it. I even heard of one person who told a client he had a special machine that extracted the spirit voices from the tape. This is absurd and any such machine I would have had by now. I think what he was referring to was Sound Forge :)

People Who Have a Haunting or Who are Inquisitive

I do not recommend that anyone try to get EVP's in there own home. The reason for this is simple. Do you want a Haunting or Spiritual Attachment? Please do not attempt to record any EVP's in your home unless you are fully aware of what can happen or know what to do if something comes in. If you have a haunting or spirit in your home then all I can say to you is this : DO NOT RECORD EVP'S IN YOUR HOME OR THE AFTEREFFECTS CAN CAUSE THE ACTIVITY IN YOUR HOME TO INCREASE DRAMATICALLY. Some people may not believe this so if you think it's not true I'll just wait for your phone call.
