McCall's Needlework & Crafts, Spring-Summer, 1972

CROCHETED BEACH ENSEMBLE!! Lacy tabard covers up color-cued bikini worked in easy "fabric" stitch. The TOTE BAG repeats the picot pattern. Made of Puritan Mercerized Crochet Cotton.

BIKINI: SIZES: Directions for small size (8-10). Changes for medium size (12-14) are in parentheses.
Body Bust Size: 31-1/2"-32-1/2" (34"-36").
Blocked Bust Size: 33" (36").

MATERIALS: Puritan Mercerized Crochet Cotton (American Thread Company), 8 (9) 175-yard balls orange. Steel crochet hook No. 1. (Or English size 3/0.) One package round elastic. Two hooks and eyes. One yard 1/4" ribbon.

GAUGE: 13 sts = 2"; 5 rows = 1" (double strand of cotton).
Note: Work with double strand of cotton throughout.

BIKINI BOTTOMS: FRONT: Beg at crotch, ch 18 (22).
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * dc in next ch, sc in next ch, repeat from * across -- 17 (21) sts. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), * sc in next dc, dc in next sc, repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in first dc, * dc in next sc, sc in next dc, repeat from * across, end sc in top of ch 3. Turn.
Rows 4 and 5: Repeat rows 2 and 3.
Row 6 (inc row): Ch 3, sc in first sc, dc and sc in next dc, work in pat to last 2 sts, sc and dc in each of last 2 sts -- 21 (25) sts. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 7-9: Work even in pat.
Row 10: Repeat row 6 -- 25 (29) sts.
Rows 11-13: Work even in pat.
Row 14: Repeat row 6 -- 29 (33) sts.
Row 15: Repeat row 3.
Rows 16-20: Repeat rows 6 and 3 alternately, end with row 6 -- 41 (45) sts.
Row 21: Sc and dc in each of first 2 sts, work in pat to last 2 sts, dc and sc in each of last 2 sts, drop lp from hook; do not turn. With a separate double strand of cotton, ch 26 (28), join to first st at beg of row, cut thread. Pick up dropped lp, ch 28 (30), turn.
Row 22: Sc in 4th ch from hook, * dc in next st, sc in next st, repeat from * across ch, work in pat across center section, work in pat across other ch -- 97 (105) sts. Ch 1, turn.
** Rows 23-26: Repeat rows 3 and 2 alternately.
Row 27 (dec row): Keeping last lp of each st on hook, sc in first dc, dc in next sc, yo and through all 3 lps on hook, work in pat to last 2 sts; keeping last lp of each st on hook, dc in next sc, sc in next dc, yo and through all 3 lps on hook. Ch 1, turn.
       Repeat rows 23-27, 3 times more. Work even in pat for 2 (4) rows. End off.

BIKINI BOTTOMS: BACK: Rows 1-3: Work as for front.
Row 4: Ch 3, sc in first sc, dc and sc in next dc, work in pat to last 2 sts, sc and dc in each of last 2 sts -- 21 (25) sts. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Sc and dc in each of first 2 sts, work in pat to last 2 sts, dc and sc in each of last 2 sts -- 25 (29) sts.
Rows 6 and 7: Repeat rows 4 and 5 -- 33 (37) sts.
Row 8: Repeat row 4 -- 37 (41) sts.
Row 9: Work in pat.
Rows 10-13: Repeat rows 4 and 9 alternately -- 45 (49) sts.
Rows 14 and 15: Repeat rows 4 and 5 -- 53 (57) sts.
Rows 16-21: Repeat rows 4 and 9 alternately -- 65 (69) sts.
Rows 22-24: Repeat rows 4, 5 and 4 -- 77 (81) sts.
Rows 25-30: Repeat rows 9 and 4 alternately -- 89 (93) sts.
Rows 31 and 32: Repeat rows 5 and 4 -- 97 (101) sts.
Row 33: Repeat row 9.
Row 34: Repeat row 4 -- 101 (105) sts. Drop lp from hook, do not turn. With a separate double strand of cotton, ch 10 (12), join to first st at beg of row; cut thread. Pick up dropped lp, ch 11 (13), turn.
Row 35: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * dc in next ch, sc in next ch, repeat from * across ch, work in pat across center section, work in pat across other ch -- 121 (129) sts. Ch 3, turn.
Row 36: Repeat row 2. Work from ** of front. End off.

FINISHING: Steam lightly. Sew crotch and side seams. Work 1 row of sc around each leg opening, working over elastic. Adjust elastic; knot and weave in ends.

Edging: Rnd 1:  From right side, beg at center back, work 1 row of sc around top edge, working over elastic and having a multiple of 5 sts. Sl st in first sc. Adjust elastic; knot and weave in ends.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in each of next 4 sc, ch 4, sl st in last sc made, * sc in each of next 5 sc, ch 4, sl st in last sc made, repeat from * around, sl st in first sc.
Rnd 3: Sl st across first 2 sc, ch 8, turn, sl st in 5th ch from hook for picot, ch 1, dc in same sc, * ch 3, sk next 4 sc, dc in next sc, ch 5, sl st in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, dc in same sc, repeat from * around, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch of ch 8. End off.

BIKINI BRA: First Half: Ch 94 (102).
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * dc in next ch, sc in next ch, repeat from across -- 93 (101) sts.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), * sc in next dc, dc in next sc, repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in first dc, * dc in next sc, sc in next dc, repeat from * across, end sc in top of ch 3. Turn.
Row 4: Work in pat across 22 (26) sts, inc 1 st in each of next 2 sts (inc points), continue in pat across next 38 (42) sts, sl st I n next st. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Sk sl st, sl st  in each of next 2 sts, sc in each of next 2 sts, work in pat across 35 (39) sts, inc 1 st in each of next 2 sts, work in pat across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 6: Sk 1 st, work in pat across next 23 (27) sts, inc 1 st in each of next 2 sts, continue in pat across next 36 (40) sts, sl st in next st. Ch 1, turn.
Row 7: Work as for row 5, but work across 33 (37) sts before inc points, end sk last st.
Row 8: Work as for row 6, but work across 34 (38) sts after inc points.
Row 9: Work as for row 5, but work across 31 (35) sts before inc points, end sk last st.
Row 10: Sk 1 st, work in pat across 58 (66) sts, sl st in next st. Ch 1, turn.
Row 11: Sk the sl st, sl st in each of next 2 sts, sc in each of next 2 sts, work in pat across, sk last st. Ch 1, turn.
Row 12: Sk 1 st, work in pat across 52 (60) sts, sl st in next st. Ch 1, turn.
Row 13: Repeat row 11.
Row 14: Sk 1 st, work in pat across 46 (54) sts, sl st in next st. Ch 1, turn.
Row 15: Repeat row 11.
Row 16: Sk 1 st, work in pat across next 16 (20) sts, dec in next 2 sts (to dec 1 st: holding back last lp of each st, work pat in each of next 2 sts, yo hook and through all lps on hook), dec in next 2 sts, work in pat across next 20 (24) sts, sl st in next st. Ch 1, turn.
Row 17: Repeat row 11.
Row 18: Repeat row 16, but work in pat across 12 (16) sts before dec points and 16 (20) sts after dec points.
Row 19: Repeat row 11.
Row 20: Repeat row 16, but work in pat across 8 (12) sts before dec points and 12 (16) sts after dec points.
Row 21: Repeat row 11.
Row 22: Repeat row 16, but work in pat across 4 (8) sts before dec points and 8 (12) sts after dec points.
Row 23: Repeat row 11.
Row 24: Repeat row 16, but work in pat across 2 (6) sts before dec points.
Row 25: Repeat row 11. For small size only, end off. For medium size, continue to dec as before once more; end off.

Second Half: Work as for first half for 3 rows. Cut thread; turn. Sk 30 sts, join thread in next st, work in pat to end of row. Repeat from row 4 of first half.

FINISHING: Steam lightly. Sew center seam.

Edging: Working along opposite side of starting ch, join double strand of cotton in first st, sc in each st across; work sc, ch 1, sc in corner st; sc in each row across short end; sc, ch 1, sc in corner; sc in each st to beg of curved edge, place a marker on work; work 80 (90) sc around curved edge to center, sl st in seam, work remainder of rnd to correspond, join with sl st in first sc.
Next Row: Sl st in each st across lower edge; end off.
Next Row: From right side, join cotton in first st at right top edge, ch 1, sc in same st. * sc in each of 5  sc, ch 4, sl st in last sc for picot, repeat from * across top edge (have picot at center), end sc in each of last 4 sts, turn.
Next Row: Sl st in each of first 2 sts, sc in next st, ch 8, sl st in 5th ch from hook for picot, ch 1, dc in same st with sc, * ch 3, sk next 4 sts, dc in next st, ch 5, sl st in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, dc in same st with dc (picot shell), repeat from * to 3rd st before first picot to right of center picot (ch 1, sk 4 sts, picot shell in next st) 3 times, ch 3, sk next 4 sts, picot shell in next st, repeat from first * to second * across, End off.

Straps (make 2): Ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 2 ch. Ch 1, turn each row. Work in rows of 3 sc until strap is 17" (18"). End off. Sew ribbon to one side of straps. Sew straps in place. Sew hooks and eyes at short ends.

TABARD: SIZES: Directions for small size (8-10). Changes for medium size (12-14) are in parentheses.

MATERIALS: Puritan Mercerized Crochet Cotton (American Thread Company), 7 (8) 175-yard balls gold (A), 4 (5) balls orange (B). Aluminum crochet hook size F. (Or English size 8.) One yard 2" grosgrain ribbon. 1-1/2 yards nylon net.

GAUGE: 9 dc = 2" (double strand of cotton).
Note: Work with double strand of cotton throughout.

TABARD BACK: YOKE: With B, ch 63 (69).
Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2: Sk first st, dc in next dc and in each dc across, dc in top of ch 3 -- 61 (67) dc counting ch 3 as 1 dc. Ch 3, turn.
Rows 3-5: Repeat row 2. End off. Turn.

TABARD CENTER PANEL: Row 1: Join A in 22nd dc, ch 3, dc in same st, ch 5, sl st in 4th ch from hook for picot, ch 1, dc in same st with last dc, * ch 3, sk next 2 dc, open shell in next st (to make open shell, dc in st, make picot, ch 1, dc in same st), repeat from * 5 (7) times, dc in same st with last shell. Turn each row.
Row 2: Ch 6, 2 dc in center ch of next ch-3 lp, ch 3, sl st in last dc for picot, dc in same ch with 2 dc (solid shell), * ch 3, solid shell in next ch-3 lp, repeat from across, end ch 3, dc in top of end ch.
Row 3: Ch 3, open shell in center ch of first ch-3 lp, * ch 3, open shell in center ch of next ch-3 lp, repeat from * across, end ch 3, sk first ch of end ch, open shell in next ch, sk next ch, dc in next ch.
Rows 4-7: Repeat rows 2 and 3 twice.
Row 8: Ch 3, dc in same st, repeat from * of row 2, end 2 dc in last st.
Row 9: Ch 5, work open shell pat across, end ch 2, dc in top of end ch.
Row 10: Ch 4, dc in first dc, ch-3 picot, dc in same st, ch 3, work solid shell pat across, end ch 3, sk 2 ch of end ch, 2 dc in next ch, picot in last dc, ch 1, dc in same ch.
Row 11: Ch 6, work open shell pat across, end ch 3, sk 1 ch of end ch, dc in next ch.
Row 12: Ch 4, work solid shell pat across, end ch 3, sk 1 ch of end ch, solid shell in next ch, ch 1, sk next ch, dc in next ch.
Rows 13 and 14: Repeat rows 11 and 12.
Row 15: Ch 3, dc in first dc, ch 3, work open shell pat across, end ch 3, sk 1 ch of end ch, 2 dc in next ch. Repeat rows 2-15 once, then repeat rows 2-10, end with solid shell row.
Next Row: Ch 6, dc, ch 3, dc in next ch-3 lp, * ch-3, dc, ch 3, dc in next ch-3 lp, repeat from * across, end ch 3, dc in 2nd ch of end ch. End off.

TABARD BORDER: Row 1: With wrong Side of last row of yoke facing, join B in 12th dc from right end, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in each of next 9 dc, drop lp from hook; insert hook in top of first st of row 1 of center panel, pick up dropped lp and pull through, ch 3, drop lp from hook; turn.
Row 2: Insert hook in top of first st of next solid shell row, pick up lp and pull through, dc in each of 10 dc; turn.
Row 3: Ch 3, dc in each of next 9 dc, drop lp from hook, insert hook in top of first st of next open shell row, pick up dropped lp and pull through, ch 3, drop lp from hook; turn. Repeat rows 2 and 3 until all rows of center panel have been joined. End off.
     With wrong side of last row of yoke facing, join B in same st with last st of center panel row 1, ch 3, join to top of first st, dc in each of next 10 dc, ch 3, turn. Work border to correspond to opposite side. Do not cut thread at end of last row. Ch 3, turn.
Next Row: Dc in each of next 9 dc, dc in joining, * 2 dc in next lp, dc in next dc, repeat from * across center panel, dc in joining, dc in each of next 10 dc, turn.
Next 4 Rows: Ch 3, dc in each dc across. Turn each row. End off.

TABARD EDGE: Row 1: With wrong side of last row of yoke facing, join A in same st of of yoke already worked in at right side, ch 3, sk 2 dc of yoke, jin thread to next dc as before; working down border, open shell in top of first st of row 1 of border, * ch 3, sk 1 row, open shell in top of st of next row, repeat from * to corner, ch 3, 2 open shells with ch 3 between shells in corner; working along lower edge, ch 3, sk 1 dc, open shell in next dc, ** ch 3, sk 3 dc, open shell in next dc, repeat from ** across lower edge, work corner and opposite edge to correspond. Join edge to yoke. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2: Join to yoke, ch 3, work row of solid shell pat around, working 2 solid shells with ch 3 between shells in ch-3 lp at corners. Work 1 more open shell row and 1 more solid shell row, inc at corners and join to yoke each row.

FRONT: Work as for back.

STRAPS (make 2): With A, ch 39 (44).
Row 1: Open shell in 4th ch from hook, * ch 3, sk 4 ch, open shell in next ch, repeat from * across, dc in same st with last shell; turn.
Row 2: Ch 6, solid shell in center of next ch-3 lp, * ch 3, solid shell in center of next lp, repeat from * across, ch 3, dc in end ch. Work 1 more row of open shell pat and 1 row of solid shell pat, End off.

Ties (make 4): With A, ch 95. Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. End off.

FINISHING: Steam-press pieces. Sew shoulder straps, picot edge out, to front and back over 10 dc each side of yoke. With B, work sc in each free dc across top of yoke; change to A; work sc in base of shell on strap, 3 sc in next lp, repeat across strap; change to B, work across other yoke and strap in same way.
     Line body sections and straps with net. Face yokes with ribbon.

BAG: MATERIALS: Puritan Mercerized Crochet Cotton (American Thread Company), 4 175-yard balls gold (A), 2 balls orange (B). Aluminum crochet hook size F. (Or English size 8.) One yard clear plastic. 14 brass rings 1-1/2" diameter. Large. eyed needle.

GAUGE: 9 dc = 2" (double strand of cotton).
Note: Work with double strand of cotton throughout.

BAG: Work same as for small size of Tabard until there are 8 solid shell rows. Work last row of center panel. Work border and edge the same. Work another piece the same.

FINISHING: Steam-press pieces. Sew tog at sides and bottom. Line bag with plastic. Sew rings to top of bag spacing evenly.

Drawstrings (make 2): With A, ch 172. Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. End off. Run through rings from opposite sides. Knot ends tog each side.
