OUR PARTNERS: ST. PETE’S BUSINESS CONTACTS CENTRE OPENS IN THE FINNISH CITY OF TURKU
More than 2 years have passed since the 1st St. Pete’s Business Contacts Centre opened in the Finnish city of Kotka. Today, the 2nd similar centre is opening in Turku. The chain is expanding: the BIZKON-Kotka is being added with BIZKON-Turku. The event is to take place on September 13th, 2001 at the time of holding the traditional “Days of St. Petersburg” in Turku, St.Pete’s first sister city (since 1953).
The “Days of St. Petersburg” in Turku has always been a remarkable event for both cities. It includes exhibitions, concerts, presentations, meetings, etc. Notably in Turku, the idea of partner contacts in the field of science, industry, and economics was born in September 1997. For various reasons, first of all, due to the geographical vicinity, the first St. Pete’s Business contacts centre was opened by St. Petersburg’s governor in Kotka on June 24th, 1999. Now, such a centre is being set up in Turku.
A new event is always holds some uncertainty: there are lots of joint centres of various kind, associations, foundations, and other similar organizations being created both in Finland and St. Petersburg. The BIZKON-Kotka Centre, thanks to active support both from the Kymenlaakso regional administration and the city of Kotka on the one hand and the St. Pete’s city hall on the other has proved its worth and validity. There have been over 50 joint events held (seminars, meetings, exhibitions), over 500 Russian-Finnish business contacts has been rendered assistance, many contracts and projects have been prepared. All this time, Turku’s business circles have been following closely the events held in Kotka. Now, after the presentation of St. Pete’s companies in Turku in January 2001, the visit to our city in May by a Finnish delegation headed by Turku port director Mr. Christian Ramberg, it has been resolutely decided: the BIZKON-Turku centre should come into existence. Over 30 executives of St. Pete’s BIZKON centre member companies will be visiting Turku on September 11st-15th to meet with the Finnish partners, to get joint businesses started. Turku, representing south-western Finland, has already specified 5 priorities in the further cooperation: biotechnology, shipbuilding, navigation, logistics.
The Russian side, proceeding from the previous cooperative experience, has also suggested construction and power engineering. Some of the futher directions of the cooperation are already being developed within the framework of the BIZKON-Kotka. From now on, the BIZKON-Turku can join the project development. Special attention will be paid to the joint project of creating in St. Petersburg of the Biotechnology Centre. Turku, which is known to be one of the world’s largest biotechnology hubs, has proposed St. Pete’s scientists and industrialists a programme of preparing a new joint project. Turku also has ambitious plans to improve and expand its port’s facilities. St. Pete’s shipbuilders and Maritime Administration are ready for a joint actions in this direction. St. Pete’s design-and-construction firms also have their plans: at the first stage, they are ready to take part in the designing and developing of the Turku Street in St. Petersburg. It is supposed to be a gift from the Finnish sister city timed to 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg.
The BIZKON-Turku Centre’s potential participants also have their plans. St. Petersburg’s companies are hoping they could, via Turku, have access to Swedish companies and futher to other European countries. The experience of the BIZKON-Kotka Centre has shown that the main pledge of success is every possible support on the part of both participant regions’ administrations, of St. Petersburg and Turku in this particular case. If there is support, there will be real and mutually beneficial results.
