ANDREI KRUSHINSKI: WAR GAMES NEAR CHINESE COAST

China’s military fliers piloting Su-27s have at last deserved a praise from Gen. Jang Wannyan. Reviewing yesterday the just finished 4-month long exercises of the People's Liberation Army of China (PLAC), this influential Chinese military leader, who is deputy chief of China’s Central Military Council, is quoted by the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post as charaterizing their final stage conducted in the Taiwan Strait near Dongshan
Island as a “work well done.”
The military drill reportedly involved crack troops and sophisticated weapons like missile force, amphibious tank force, marine corps, submarines, modern destroyers and Su-27 fighters. This, in particular, included 3 Chinese military satellites. Also a medium-range (3,500km) missile was launched carrying a mock nuclear warhead
The drill’s dramatic moment was “joining” it by the US navy units. 2 battle groups of US warships headed by aircraft-carriers held a 1-day drill in the South-China Sea aiming to deter China. But the Chinese commanders reacted with the following statement: ”The People’s Republic of China is ready to USA’s interference in Taiwan-related affairs” (by the way, attacks against aircraft carriers were reportedly given a proper workout during the exercises).
The level of air forces is one of major indices of combat readiness. So, the South China Morning Post, citing Taiwan sources, writes: “A year ago Gen. Jang was extremely upset having found that fliers piloting Su-27s of Russian manufacture, were not good at it under complex weather conditions. The general is said to have even threatened to reform this air force unit. But Chinese pilots toughened their training after that and did had much better showing during the Dongshan manoeuvres. Again, according to the South China Morning Post, Gen. Jang, in the course of the exercises, asked one of the pilots whether he was able to shoot down F-16s (type of aircrafts Taiwan is armed with). The pilot allegedly answered: “It’s no problem, given a proper aircraft.”
