BRAZIL: ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST

Police officers had been sent to the house of ex-Senator Luiz Estevao to seize documents relating to his business affairs in 2000. After having been expelled from the Senate for his dubious deals, Estevao and his construction group OK was under investigation.

A mandate to seize the documents had been issued by the judge Rodrigo Navarro, in an action promoted by the Director of Public Prosecutions. When the police were taking the documents, they were stopped and verbally insulted by Estevao, at which the latter was taken to the police station and charged.

However, he was released after agreeing to pay the paltry sum of 85 USD bail. It should be pointed out that if a poorer person is detained by the police, the norm is a shocking level of physical abuse which runs from a simple beating to being savagely kicked and hit with obtuse instruments by any number of police officers.

Brazil finally wakes up and tries to put its house in order, as the rest of the world looks to this giant of tomorrow with ever more incredulous eyes, incredulous at how a population of 170 million can be dormant for so long and allow a corrupt 5% to steal the country from them
