Acts of patriotism

Last Tuesday's terrorist attacks have prompted an outpouring of nationalist sentiment on a scale not seen since World War II. What is the most original or inspiring display of patriotism you've witnessed over the past week?

The passengers who fought agains the hijackerson the United flight that crashed in PA and prevented the plane from reaching Washington demonstrated great patriotism. They must have prevented thousands of additional caualties. I believe that plane was headed for the Capitol or the White House.
Linda, Boxford

A little girl drew an American flag on the sidewalk on my street & it made me cry.
Melissa, Brighton

I was amazed at the number of people in the streets on Friday night, holding lit candles and/or waving flags. I have never seen so many people showing their patriotism. The whole community came together to show their support and it was great.
Ed G., Medford

As I was eating dinner in a restaurant on Saturday night, one table started singing 'The Star Spangled Banner' and everyone else quickly joined in.
Adrienne, Somerville

I am a DJ in the New England area. I cater my services primarily to weddings. This past weekend I have had an overwhelming amount of requests for a patriotic message or song, so at the close of each event I had said a little something and then played the song "God Bless the USA" by Lee Greenwood.
Ernie, Dracut

On the common by the intersection of Main Street and West Street there were about 60 people gathered with flags candles and TONS of energy, supporting our country and cheering and waving to drivers. It was GREAT!!
Jennifer, Mansfield

Just singing the National Anthem and "God Bless America" in a packed Trinity Church on Friday was the most inspiring thing I had ever felt.
Mark, Cambridge

I have to applaud all those who are defending and simpathizing with the Muslims and citizens of Arabic descent in this country. I think it shows the true spirit of the USA when we are willing to defend our ideals of freedom and diversity in the face of all this evil.
Joe, Worcester

The subtle acts of kindness and human compassion that has been displayed by all walks of life, from the moment of our nation's tragedy, until what I hope will be the end of time. I fear for all on what lies ahead and I pray that everyone will grab hold of their faith and pray as well. Peace.
Debbie, Peabody

Yesterday on the local news I saw a picture of a house in Lexington, MA on which the owners had painted the American flag. Not just a 3x5' flag - the entire front of their house! It was a beautiful sight...neighbors and strangers were stopping by to thank the owners, including a couple from Amsterdam (I think) who had been stranded in the U.S. after the attacks and wanted to let Americans know how sorry they were.
Linda, Woburn
