Help Reaches 550 'Forgotten Widows'
More than 800 applications have been received from widows applying for the Annuity for Certain Military Surviving Spouses. Nearly 550 have been approved for monthly annuities of $180.88.
Base Retiree Activities Offices (RAO) continue to be a primary force in this ongoing program to get the word out to surviving spouses of retirees who died before the Survivor Benefit Plan became available.
Eligible are widows whose mates retired from active military service before September 21, 1972 and died before March 21, 1974. Also eligible are spouses of Reserve retirees who died before October 1, 1978. Applicants must not have remarried or be receiving any military or VA survivor annuity.
Air Force has no means of identifying these survivors. Best sources are Air Force members and their families who have personal knowledge of potential eligible survivors. Names of those persons can be passed to base RAOs or Casualty Assistance Offices. They may also be reported to Frank Viser at the Air Force Personnel Center on 1 800 531-7502.
