'Adams' book leaves imprint
(9/22/2001)
Our book group is reading ''John Adams,'' David McCullough. Having read 400 of the book's 650 pages when the tragic events of Sept. 11 occurred, I found the story to have a more powerful impact on me than it may otherwise have had. The book touches on many subjects - history, politics, love, and friendship, to name a few. But most important, it chronicles Adams's unyielding dedication to freedom and independence, despite the overwhelming opposition and uncertainty of the times.

There are so many fine books available, and bestseller lists help guide the selection process. All too often book clubs rely on current celebrity and reviewer lists while overlooking the pleasure in reading or re-reading classics.

Club is still going strong 31 years after first meeting
(9/1/2001)
Our book group began in 1970. As a young mother looking for an adult outlet, I invited several other mothers on my block to start a book group. The Birch Street Book Club continues to this day.
