Information
September 19, 2000: I have opened a new site (http://130.126.50.66/npds/) where you can download the latest version of any NPDS-related packages ebing developed by Paul Guyout. Packages area available as standalone Newton .pkg files or (with source included) as Macintosh Stuffit archives. Please be advised that these packages are pre-release versions for testing only. Please direct any feedback to Paul Guyot.
September 18, 2000: Again, the power of open source shows itself. Yoichi Takezawa of Japan is working hard to adapt NPDS to serve Japanese text (here's a screenshot of it in action). His first effort, Notepad Server Uni, is available for testing at his homepage. He has also emailed me to tell me that he is working on a Unicode-compliant (and therefore Japanese-serving) Datebook Server and Web*Pager. As always, I can't be responsible for the changes made by new developers, so please direct your technical questions to the developer of the package you're using.
August 7, 2000: Woot! NPDS was mentioned in last Thursday's Philadelphia Enquirer! Read the full story here. The article talks about using PCs and Macs as personal WWW servers but the author is obviously enamoured with the cool factor of using a PDA, too. Go Newton!
August 5, 2000: NPDS Status Update: Don't ask us when it will all be released, but Paul Guyot is working to really super-charge NPDS. From what I understand, he's got multiple connections working, which means a big speed increase on all you 166MHz 2x00's along with a number of other improvements. This, along with the ATA driver makes Paul my choice for Newton developer of the year.. the man just does not quit!
June 16, 2000: Finally, somebody has made use of NPDS's publically available source code! Paul Guyot has released updated versions of Notepad Server and NPDS Tracker Client. Notepad Server 2.03 sports cleaned up HTML code and a new visitor Email field in the Whiteboard application while Tracker Client 2.02 adds support for a custom IP, so that the user can use NPDS thru an IP masquerading gateway. Paul has a lot of other improvements on deck for NPDS, so keep checking in for updates. Meanwhile, visit the updates page to get these new packages. Since the major version number has not incremented, you won't have to wipe any preference files.. just install them over the old versions.
June 13, 2000: I've moved this site from my university's server to a free Apple iTools page. Please report any broken links or problems so I can fix them ASAP.
June 6, 2000: My thesis work is taking *ALL* of my time these days, so it looks like any updates to NPDS won't be made until at least the end of the year. I just thought I'd tack this up here to clear up any questions about whether NPDS was still in development. Go ahead and download NPDS and give it a whirl-- it's stable and surprisingly cool and I will come ny your server if you list on our tracker.
June 1, 2000: Since it's been a long time since anyone accessed it, let me remind you that the first and only issue of 4AA Magazine, the official Insider's Guide to getting the most out of NPDS is available here.
August 1, 1999: An interesting development.. I have been in touch with Jimmy Hong Ning, author of the SkyGuide planetarium simulator for Newton and it looks like I'm going to do the port of SkyGuide to NOS 2.0 machines (130 and 120 class machines). I have a lot of ideas and code from a similar but aborted project of mine that I may be working with Jimmy to integrate into SkyGuide. Keep checking back here for breaking news as it develops!
July 31, 1999: I've put up a small demonstration project that will allow you to easily add the same ever-popular Star-Notify minimization feature to your own package that I use in NPDS. It's available at the source code depot.
July 30, 1999: I've redone the Source Code Depot so that it's now a page pointing to various source packages and files rather than a simple directory listing. This should help anyone wanting the NPDS source to grab it and give it a go.
June 17, 1999: After a brief sabbatical from this project, I am working on NPDS 2.1. Slated for this release are full support for multiple character sets, improvements in security, support for true Newtonscript-based CGIs (not just Server-Side includes), transfer of Newton packages, and the ability to post and edit Names and Dates entries. Also, a host of bug fixes are in the works.
May 6 1999: Thanks to the brave efforts of some dedicated NPDS fans, we're *finally* implementing support for Unicode characters under NPDS. The example shown here is Big5 Chinese served directly from the Notepad. See if you can guess who this Newton belongs to!
April 29 1999: I noticed today that the
article on NPDS "Pocket Server" is available
on their web site. Check it out and
make sure to thank the author (a fellow Newton user) for shining the
spotlight on us Newton users once again!
April 24 1999: Well, we have our first bug fix software release today. An updated version of Notepad Server prevents the "ghost-writer" bug that would erase changes made to notes while NPDS was running. You can download it over on the NPDS 2.0 Updates Page
April 20 1999: Finally, it's done and ready for download. I'm totally jazzed to announce to you the immediate availability of the program files for NewtonOS Personal Data Sharing 2.02, which the the final public release. New in this release are numerous bug fixes, a new HTML engine that brings us into HTML 4.0 compliance, vast improvements to the scripting architecture, a host of other tweaks and tunings, as well as public availability of the source code.
April 19, 1999:I am most happy to announce that the full source code for NPDS 2.02 is now available to the public under a Gnu Public License. More information and a download link are located | here | .
While NPDS 2.0 comes
with a regular manual, I keep an online version available
and updated with the latest tips, tricks, and fixes. If
you're checking out NPDS for the first time, its opening
chapter gives a great overview of what you can
expect.

The source code depot is located here. Please don't link to pages inside the source directory as I may have to move them from server to server depending on my needs.
