Web Surpasses One Billion Documents

Inktomi and NEC Research Institute Complete First Web Study

Inktomi Launches World's Largest Media Search Database
at 2.5 Million Files

Inktomi Extends Core Technologies to Deliver Leading
Search Relevance

Foster City, Calif., January 18, 2000 - Inktomi Corp. (NASDAQ: INKT), developer of scalable Internet infrastructure software, today announced that the company and the NEC Research Institute, Inc. have completed a new study that verifies the Web has grown to more than one billion unique pages. This milestone for the Internet comes as an outgrowth of Inktomi's global Web crawling operations, and the new expanded database represents the industry's largest catalog of unique Web pages.

Inktomi, which powers searches for many of the world's most prominent portal and content sites, worked with the NEC Research Institute to validate the findings and methodology of the study. In addition, Inktomi's WebMap™ index of over one billion documents will be combined with its Concept Induction™ technology to build unique new services for its customers, such as the Inktomi Media Search Database. By examining the entire Web and analyzing the billions of links between all of its documents, Inktomi can distill an index of the highest quality documents to provide users with more relevant and intuitive results. Inktomi's customers include America Online, British Telecommunications, HotBot, iWon.com, LookSmart, MSN, Snap.com, and Yahoo!.

"Together with Inktomi, our study has verified the existence of over one billion unique indexable Web pages on the Internet," said Steve Lawrence, Research Scientist, NEC Research Institute, Inc. "Inktomi is on the leading edge of innovation in the search field helping users access the incredible diversity of information on the Web."

"We're very pleased to be working with the NEC to combine their distinguished research efforts with our proven industry experience providing search services to the world's largest portals and destination sites, " said Dennis McEvoy, senior vice president at Inktomi. "As the first company to expand its Web search operations to over one billion documents, Inktomi continues to solidify its position as the leading provider of Internet infrastructure software."

World's Largest Media Search Database
Inktomi has created one of the world's most extensive multimedia indexes, with more than 2.5 million media files for use with the Inktomi Search Engine. Inktomi's media index is comprised of a wide variety of media types including Real Networks, MP3, MPEG, AVI and .wav media files, for which Inktomi has created a set of specialized indexing procedures to ensure that the Inktomi Search Engine always returns the most relevant, freshest, and highest quality results.

"Offering our customers the most advanced media search capabilities will enable iWon.com to provide users with the highest quality media index on the Web today," said Jonas Steinman, Founder and Co-CEO at iWon.com. "Our goal is to help our users discover the next level of empowerment and excitement on the Internet, while providing them with a unique way to have fun online."

Leading Relevance Technologies
Inktomi's Concept Induction, a core technology that was introduced in June 1999, has been further improved with the integration of Click Analysis technology. This new relevance technology combined with Inktomi's unique Text and Link Analysis technology enables Inktomi's Search and Directory services to provide the highest quality results for all user search queries across the leading portals on the Web.

Inktomi's Concept Induction technology uses advanced supercomputing techniques to model human conceptual classification of content, and projects this intelligence across millions of documents. Concept Induction technology also leverages the link structure of the Web to discover conceptual linkages among documents and select the highest quality and most relevant content.

"Inktomi 's commitment to deliver exceptional search technologies has been the basis of our long-standing, strategic relationship," said Joel Truher, chief technology officer of Lycos. "Inktomi's scalable and highly customizable approach, combined with our proprietary technology, allows us to offer relevant, comprehensive search results to our customers, and we look forward to continuing to employ Inktomi's solutions as an integral part of our search strategy."
