Spinnerin - The Bare Facts of Crochet for Beginners, 1971

EASY PATTERN - and very Retro!  Pattern came from a "beginner's" book so don't be afraid to try these!

MATERIALS:
Spinnerin Deluxe Knitting Worsted or Germantown Deluxe or Marvel Twist Wash Fit - 4 oz. skeins - 1 skein - Crochet hook size I or size to give gauge.

GAUGE: 7 dc = 2 inches 3 rows = 2 inches

BERET: Ch 6. Join with a sl st to form a ring. Note: Work every st thru back loop.
Rnd 1: Ch 2 (count as 1 dc), work 17 dc in ring, join with a sl st to top of ch-2.
Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in next dc, * dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc; rep from * around, join with sl st to top of ch-2.
Rnd 3: Ch 2, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, * dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next st; rep from * around, join, (36 dc).
Rnd 4: Ch 2, dc in each of next 2 dc, 3 dc in next dc, * dc in each of next 3 dc; 3 dc in next dc; rep from * around, join, (54 dc).
Rnd 5: Ch 2, dc in each of next 3 dc, 3 dc in next dc, * dc in each of next 5 dc; 3 dc in next dc; rep from *, ending dc in last dc, join (72 dc).
Rnd 6: Ch 2, dc in each of next 4 dc, 3 dc in next dc, * dc in each of next 7 dc, 3 dc in next dc; rep from *, ending dc in each of last 2 dc, join, (18 incs). Continue in this way to inc 18 sts in a rnd (having 2 sts more between incs in each successive rnd) 3 times more, (144 dc).
Rnd 10: Ch 2, dc in each dc. Join (144 dc). Note: From this point, work thru both loops of each st.
Rnd 11: Ch 2, * sk 1 dc, dc in next dc; rep from * around, join.
Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc in each dc, join with a sl st to first sc. Place a marker in work to indicate beg of rnds. Work 3 rnds of 1 sc in each sc, join.
Last rnd: Ch 1, turn. Thru top loop, work sl st loosely in each sc. Join and fasten off.

Pompon: Make a large pompon, (click here for an illustration of how to make a pompon), and sew to top of beret.

BAG FRONT: Work chain and first 5 rnds same as for beret. There are 72 dc in last rnd. Join and fasten off.

BACK: Work same as front.

HANDLE: Join yarn to front from right side in any dc after 3 dc inc, ch 2.
Row 1: Dc in each of next 4 dc. Ch 2, turn.
Row 2: Dc in sp between first 2 dc, dc in each of next 2 sps, dc in top of turning ch-2. Ch 2, turn. Rep Row 2 until handle is 8 inches. Fasten off leaving an end for sewing.

FINISHING: With wrong sides tog and points (formed by incs) matching, place front and back tog. Beg at center st of 2nd inc from handle, insert hook thru top loop of front piece and 2 loops of back piece and work sc to join; continue to work sc in this way to opposite inc on other side of handle and fasten off. With yarn attached to handle, sew to back to correspond to front.

FRINGE: Wrap yarn around a 5-inch cardboard. Cut yarn at 1 end. Fold 2 strands in half. Insert crochet hook from back in sc at center st of point below side joining, catch fold and draw thru st, draw ends thru fold, tighten knot. Place fringe in every st to opposite point. Trim evenly.
