Boxen

Boxen

For some reason I've decided to borrow most my machine names from Douglas Adam's Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy. I guess I needed some sort of naming convention, that's all.

Vogon

vogon is a biggie: I meant it to be pretty strong. I also meant it for experiments and, maybe, a bit of gaming (although I have not played much games for the past 2-3 years). I guess that all shows in the specs:

CPU Dual Intel Celleron-533
Mother board A-Bit BP6
Memory 256Mb ECC 100MHz
Hard drive(s) 30GB IBM Deskstar UDMA-66
Video Matrox G400 dual-headed with 32MB VRAM
Monitor Still pending, using old LG 56T
Other
  • ZyXeL Modem
  • Internal Zip-100 drive
Operating System(s) Currently it runs FreeBSD 4.0-RELEASE -- it was the only system to provide UDMA-66 hard drive support out-of-the-box

Zaphod

zaphod is my trusted ThinkPad. It is a bit old now: over 2 years (close to 2 and a half, really). So, it cannot be called a "super" now, but I still think it is in a pretty good shape, quite adequate for its tasks. In fact, I do not find it significantly slower than trillian, despite the fact that its CPU clock more than twice slower than that of a Toshiba.

Model IBM ThinkPad 770E (9548)
CPU Mobile Intel Pentium II 200
Memory 128Mb
Hard drive 5GB
Video Cyber 9397 4Mb
LCD 14.1" XGA (1024x768, 24bit)
Other
  • 2 PCMCIA ports
  • DVD ROM
  • 3-hour battery
Operating system(s) Dual-boot WinNT4/Debian GNU/Linux

Trillian

trillian is another laptop. It is the newest of all boxen (though it may be wrong to call this slew little beauty a `box'), and (clock/RAM-wise) the most powerful. Have not had much time to try it out yet. We'll see in a month or so how cool it is (and if).
Model Toshiba Portégé 7200CT
CPU Mobile Intel Pentium III 600
Memory 320Mb
Hard drive 12GB
Video Trident Cyber9540 4Mb
LCD 13.3" XGA (1024x768, 32bit)
Other
  • 2 PCMCIA ports
  • DVD ROM and other expansions are available through Network/DVD docking station
  • 3-hour 9-cell battery
Operating system(s) NT as a primary: I use it in the office. But Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 is sitting in a spare 2Gb partition. Here's the story on that.

The thing I really like about this one is its ability to send a higher frequency signal onto SVGA port for external monitor. So, at the same 1024x768/32bit you get 60Hz on LCD and 85Hz on CRT -- much less strain on the eyes!

Otherwise, as I said before I do not see it being such a breakthrough compared to TP. Sure, it maybe faster, but not three times faster as the clock (theoretically) suggests. Oh, yeah, obviously it is much lighter. And less bulky. But that's without a CD/DVD-ROM, only 1 speaker... Frankly, I'd expected a lot more, not just a different sticker with yet another stick added under a blot logo.

The real test is coming, however. I'll have a page on the Linux experience with this baby.

Hill

hill is one of Trilogies hosts. It's nothing sexy, just an old Pentium 133 with 32Mb memory serving pages, sending mail and doing a bunch of other stuff.

As well as most other my boxes, it runs Debian -- it's a breeze to administer a Debian box from afar. It also is a nice place to experiment with the serious stuff, like bind, real mail system, etc. -- unlike the rest of the boxen (except m) it sits there in the wild open of the Net, not hiding behind safety of a firewall.

M

Don't ask me why m -- I did not give it its name... Compared to the rest of the crew, it is a weakling: a mere 486 with just 16Mb (man, just think 5 years back...) RAM. Unlike any of the rest of the crew, it runs A-Bit's Gentus, which is an RPM (==RedHat) distro. I have not had much time to mess with this one, it just went on-line 2 weeks ago. Gotta put it into a g00d shape, man.

Enterprize

...used to be the name I was giving to all my boxes ever since I first tried Linux. Yeah, I am a Trekkie. Except its been pretty tough to stay in touch with Rodenberry's creation over in Russia, but true love will defeat anything, right? So I was callin'em all `enterprize'. Nice name, until I got a second box on the network. Should have I called it a `warbird' or `birdofprey'? That's when I started off devising a new naming convention (see above).

Anyway, this is more like a tribute to the enterprize, as it is no more. Gone. Given away for a good cause, to help out getting our environment cleaner and safer. What it used to sport was:

CPU Intel Pentium-Pro 200
Mother board ASUSTek
Memory 96Mb EDO
Hard drive(s) 2 WesternDigital Caviars: 5 and 10GB UDMA33
Video ATI Xpert@Work with 8Mb VRAM
Monitor LG 56T
Other
  • ZyXeL Modem
  • Internal Zip-100 drive (vogon inherited it)
Operating System(s) At various times it ran from 1 to 4 operating systems all together: Windows 95/98/NT, BeOS, a few Linuxes (Caldera, Debian, RedHat, Slackware). In the end it had Linux and BeOS R4 installed.
