Picture, caption follows Northern Virginia, Sept. 22, 2001 — Homes in neighborhoods throughout the United States, like these in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., have been displaying the U.S. flag since the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center. The displaying of the national flag is symbolizing the solidarity with national leadership and as homage to the victims and survivors of the attacks. Picture, caption follows New York, N.Y., Sept. 19, 2001 — A U.S. Army Blackhawk helicopter lands aboard the Navy's hospital ship USS Comfort (T-AH 20) docked at Pier 92 in Manhattan. The Honorable Thomas E. White, Secretary of the Army, was viewing Comfort and the devestation at the World Trade Center. Comfort is serving as a lodging facility for disaster recovery personnel, providing housing, laundry, food, medical and other services to volunteers and rescue personnel. Comfort is part of U.S. Joint Forces Command's military support to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which is coordinating federal support following the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.
