Wales & Borders Trains
- more than just a new name for Wales & West in Wales

Wales & Borders Trains will progressively replace Wales & West branding on services in Wales and the Marches. This is part of preparations being carried out at the request of the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) to prepare the framework for the new Wales & Borders franchise, which is due to be franchised as part of the governments' plans to improve the rail network. Wales & Borders Trains will commence operations fully as a Train Operating Company on 14 October 2001.

Wales & Borders will inherit from Wales & West and Valley Lines services within Wales and also services between South/West Wales and Birmingham, London Waterloo and the West Country. Services from Birmingham to Aberystwyth, on the Cambrian Coastline to Pwllheli and from Birmingham to Chester that are currently operated by Central Trains will also transfer to Wales & Borders. Services from Holyhead along the North Wales Coast to Manchester/Liverpool and Birmingham currently operated by First North Western, will transfer into the new structure at a future date.

Wales & Borders Trains will also take over responsibility for the operation of stations in South Wales currently operated by First Great Western. These are Newport, Cardiff Central, Bridgend, Neath, Port Talbot and Swansea. There will be no change to train services operated by First Great Western or Virgin Trains. Wales & Borders will operate all stations in Wales eventually, along with many in the Marches area, such as Chester, Shrewsbury, Hereford and Chepstow.

Valley Lines will continue to operate as a self contained unit with it¹s own distinctive identity, although as an integral part of Wales & Borders Trains.

We will operate from a headquarters based in Cardiff.

Our objective will be to build on the achievements of Central Trains, Wales & West and Valley Lines working with our partners in both the public and private sector to improve services for the benefit of all our customers. Our owner, National Express Group, is one of the short listed bidders for the new franchise and through this process we hope to bring about a step change improvement in our activities in years to come.
