Langley pilots find themselves on new kind of combat patrol

HAMPTON -- For most of the fighter pilots at Langley Air Force Base, it is a completely new experience: flying combat air patrols over their own country.

Not since the Cold War, when U.S. pilots roamed the skies looking for Soviet bombers, have active-duty fighter squadrons flown armed combat missions in U.S. airspace.
