Walkers are first divided into rigid frame and waist-motion devices (typically an oscillating motor rotates the waist). Each division is then subdivided according to how the motion is accomplished:

  • Oscillating motion refers to a motor that is continuously reversing direction.
  • Continuously rotating motors always turn the same direction and usually rely on some kind of mechanical linkage to get their walking motion.
  • Muscle wire is a wire that shortens when it is heated (e.g. by a current) and lengthens when allowed to cool (provided some tension is applied).
  • Solenoids provide a short linear motion when current is applied.
