Where God Was
In the aftermath of September 11, some ultra-Orthodox acquaintances in the United States started to speak in mystical terms. There was the quiet suggestion by one woman that perhaps God was punishing Americans for “the decadent age we’re living in.” At a women’s-only fundraiser in Manhattan “miracles from the World Trade Center” were shared: One person was saved by being called to the lobby level to greet an emissary from a yeshivah; another survived because she had been visiting the sick that morning and was late to work. “This would be a declaration without territory. A state without borders is no better than territories without a state.” Foreign Minister Shimon Peres on November 8, in a speech to the French parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, on rumors that Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat is set to delcare a Palestinian state at the U.N. General Assembly debate next week.

"You say things you have no knowledge of, because you are distant and do not wish to speak to me. I am willing to sit with you and explain, so that you will know the facts." Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, to Syrian Foreign Minister Farouq a-Shara at the November 5 European Middle East economic meeting in Brussels, after Shara accused Israel of “state terrorism” at a meeting attended by European foreign ministers.
