Friend or Foe
lyrics by Adam Ant and Marco Pirroni, copyright 1982 by Colgems-EMI Music Publishing Ltd

Take it up or leave it
I'm not going to change a bit
If it means heartache
Then leave it out for your sake
I tried and try tried
To take care of my insides
Nobody's perfect so leave me if you object

Chorus
I want those who get to know me
To become admirers or my enemies

When you're a pirouetting highkicking
Thighslapping cruiser
When you're a hipgrinding spellbinding
Cleancut seducer
You have to be careful so people take note
I take it serious, but I still like a joke

Chorus

Keep your philosophy
It doesn't apply to me
If it means heartache
Then leave it out for your sake
I tried and I try tried
But still you say that I lied
Nobody's perfect so leave me if you object

Chorus

I think it was the rhythm of this particular song that first hooked me, it said, "Make a video out of me" and I took it to my partner who couldn't help agreeing. Combine that with the chorus, and you've got an irresistible little song. I mean honestly, doesn't "I want those who get to know me to become admirers or my enemies." pretty much sum up Joxer? He's the kind of character that people either love or hate, there's very little room for in betweens with him. I must admit, though, that the middle section of the song really did make itself. We reserved the "When you're a..." bit for scenes from "For Him the Bell Tolls", if you remember the episode at all I can tell you that during the verse "When you're a hipgrinding spellbinding clean cut seducer..." we used the cave sequence where he slow-mo shakes off the water Gabrielle threw on him. It was another case of both of us turning to one another and saying, "I know the perfect scene...!"
