10-11 Kimono Coat

Woman's Day Granny Squares (donated by Marion)


Combine one bold square, two versions of single crochet and three honeyed tones of knitting worsted. Made of American Thread Dawn Sayelle Yarn.

SIZES: Misses' medium and large. Garment width around underarms, 36" (43")

MATERIALS: American Thread Dawn Sayelle Knitting Worsted, 4 (5) skeins Honey Beige, 2 skeins Camel, 1 skein Fisherman. Crochet hook size H for misses' medium size; size I for misses' large size, or size required to crochet to gauge. Four buttons, 5/8" in diameter.

GAUGE: 3 pat sts on Back = 1" (H hook); 5 sts = 2" (I hook).

BACK: With H (I) hook and Camel, ch 55.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across--54 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in back loop of each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in front loop of each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 for pattern for Back. Work until 11 rows from beginning. At end of last row cut Camel.
Row 12: Join Beige and continue in pattern as established. Work until 35 rows, or about 11-1/2" (13"), from beginning.

Shape Armholes: SI St over first 5 sts, work to last 5 sts. Turn. Dec 1 St each edge every row 2 times--40 sts. Work even for 6 rows more. Change to Fisherman, and work until 17 rows from beginning.

Shape Shoulders: SI St over first 5 sts, work to last 5 sts, turn. SI St over 4 sts, work across to last 4 sts. Turn. Repeat last row one time more. Fasten off.

FRONT: To Make Cluster: (Yo and draw up a 1/2" loop) 4 times in same St, yo and through all loops on hook.

MOTIF: Make 1. With Beige, ch 4, join with SI St to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 16 SC in ring, join with SI St to first SC.
Rnd 2: Ch 2, work cluster in same St as starting ch, * ch 1, SC in next SC, cluster; repeat from * around, join with SI St to top of starting ch--8 clusters.
Rnd 3: Ch 2, cluster in same St, * 2 SC in closing St of cluster on Rnd 1, cluster in ch-1 space; repeat from * around, join.
Rnd 4: SI St in first cluster, ch 4, dc in same St, * between next 2 SC work dc, ch 1, dc, in next cluster work dc, ch 1, dc; repeat from * around as established, SI St in 3rd ch of starting ch.
Rnd 5: SI St in next ch-space, ch 3 for first dc, in same space work 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc for corner, * (3 dc in next ch-space) 3 times, in next ch-space work 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc; repeat from * 2 times more, end (3 dc in next ch-space) 3 times, join to top of starting ch-4 corners established.
Rnd 6: SI St to ch-1 space at corner, ch 3 for first dc, in same space work 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, * (skip 3 dc, 3 dc between two 3-dc groups) 4 times, in corner work 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc; repeat from * 2 times more, end (skip 3 dc, 3 dc between two 3-dc groups) 4 times, join to top of starting ch.
Rnd 7: Insert hook from back to front to back around each dc post of last rnd and work a post SC in each dc around, work ch 1 at all corners; end by joining with SI St to first SC.
Rnd 8: Ch 3, work cluster in same St, * ch 1, in ch-1 corner work cluster, ch 1, cluster, (ch 1, skip 1 St, cluster in next St) 8 times; repeat from * until 3rd corner has been completed, (ch 1, skip 1 St, cluster in next St) 7 times, draw color Camel through for ch-1, in Camel work cluster, ch 1, corner, ch 1, cluster, draw Beige through for ch 1, complete last side as established, join--one corner, including cluster before and after corner, worked in Camel and the remainder of the square in Beige. (Note: When working Camel corner, work over Beige; and always pick up new color from under dropped color; cut Camel after Beige is picked up again.)
Rnd 9: Ch 1, work * 2 SC in each cluster, in corner work 2 SC, ch 1, 2 SC; repeat from * to 3 clusters before Camel ch-1 corner, draw Camel through on last yo of SC on 4th cluster before corner, 2 Camel SC in each of next 3 clusters, in corner work 2 SC, ch 1, 2 SC, 2 Camel SC in each of next 3 clusters, on last SC draw Beige through on yo, complete last side as established in Beige, join with Sl St.
Rnd 10: Sl St to next space between 2-sc groups, ch 1, * (SC between 2-sc groups, ch 1) to corner, at corner work 2 SC, ch 1, 2 SC; repeat from * to space before beginning of Camel, join Camel as before, ch 1, (SC between 2 SC, ch 1) 4 times, work corner as before, ch 1, (SC between 2 SC, ch 1) 4 times, draw Beige through last ch 1 and complete rnd as established, join.
Rnd 11: SI St to ch-1 space, ch 1, SC in same space, * (ch 1, SC in next ch-1 space) to corner, SC in St before ch-1 corner, ch 1, in corner work 2 SC, ch 1, 2 SC, ch 1, SC in SC immediately after corner; repeat from * to 1 St before Camel corner, with Camel continue around corner as established, continue with Camel 1 St further than last row, complete remainder of last side in Beige.
Rnd 12: SI St to ch-1 space, ch 3, dc in same space as starting ch, * (2 dc in each ch-1 space) to corner, in corner work 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc; repeat from * to 1 St before Camel corner, working in Camel continue as established to 1 St further than Rnd 11, complete rnd in Beige as established.
Rnd 13: Working color on color, repeat Rnd 7 -- 34 dc on each side.

SIDE PANELS:
Note that motif is arranged as a diamond; Beige sides are the top; Beige/Camel sides are bottom.
Top Side Panel 1: Row 1: Right side facing, join Beige at right-hand corner to work toward top corner, work post SC in each SC to top corner--34 SC, Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Working in front loop of each SC across, draw up a loop in each of first 2 SC, yo and through 3 loops on hook (1 SC dec), SC in front loop of each SC to last 2 SC, dec 1 sc, as before--1 SC dec each edge. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Working in back loop of each SC, dec 1 SC each edge, SC across   . Ch 1, turn. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until all sts are worked off.

Top Side Panel 2: Row 1: Right side facing, join Beige at top corner, work post SC in each SC to next corner. Ch 1, turn. Complete as Top Side Panel 1.

Bottom Side Panel 1: Row 1: Right side facing, join Camel at bottom corner, work post SC in 17 SC, on 17th SC bring Beige through on last yo, work Beige post SC in remaining 17 SC to next corner. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Working in pattern same as Top Side Panel 1, SC to 1 St before Camel, bring Camel through on last yo, complete row in Camel. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Work in pattern same as Top Side Panel 1, SC to 1 St after Camel, bring Beige through on last yo, complete row in Beige. Ch 1, turn. Continuing to move Camel up one St on each row as established, complete same as Top Side Panel 1.

Bottom Side Panel 2: Row 1: Right side facing, join Beige at 1 remaining side corner, work post sc in 17 sc, on 17th sc bring Camel through on last yo, work Camel post sc on remaining 17 sc to bottom corner. Complete to correspond to Bottom Side Panel 1, working to keep Camel edge straight across bottom of motif.

YOKE: Wrong side facing, join Fisherman along top edge (Beige side), ch 2 for first hdc, work 51 hdc evenly spaced across-52 hdc counting starting ch-2. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Working in front loop of each hdc, work sc, in each hdc across. Ch 2, turn.
Row 3: Work hdc in front loop of first 23 sc, skip 2 sc, trc around post of hdc directly below next 2nd skipped sc, working in back of trc just worked, trc around post of hdc of first skipped sc (first cross st made 2 sc left unworked on Row 3), sc in each of next 2 sc (center front), skip next 2 sc, trc around post of hdc below furthest skipped sc, trc around post of hdc below remaining skipped sc, hdc. in front loop of next 23 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4 and All Even-Numbered Rows: Sc in front loop of each sc and each trc across.
Row 5: Sc in back loop of first 23 sc, trc around post of next 2 trc 2 rows below, sc in next 2 sc, 2 trc around post of next 2 trc, complete row as established.
Row 7: Sc in back loop of first 24 sts, skip next st, 1 trc around post of 2nd trc of Row 5, trc around post of skipped trc, skip next st, trc around post of next trc, in back of trc just worked, work 1 trc around post of skipped trc, skip a total of 4 sc at top, sc in back loop of each st across.
Row 9: Sc in back loop of first 24 sts, trc around post of each of next 4 trc, skip a total of 4 sc at center, hdc in back loop to end of row.
Row 11: Work 23 hdc in back loop, skip 1 trc, trc around post of next trc, work in back of trc just made trc around post of skipped trc, skip 2 sc at top,. sc in next 2 sc, skip 1 trc, trc around post of next trc, trc around post of skipped trc, hdc in back loop across. Repeat Rows 5 through 11 for pattern. Keeping to pattern, work until a total of 14 rows have been worked.

Shape Neck and Shoulder: Place a marker on each side of center 14 sts -- 19 sts each side. Working 1 side only and keeping to pattern, dec 1 st at neck edge every row 2 times. At the same time, on Row 16 (wrong side), after 1 st dec at neck edge, work to last 5 sts. Turn.
Row 17: Skip first st, sl st over next 6 sts, work in pattern over remaining 5 sts. Fasten off. Work other side to correspond, reversing shaping.

Side Strip: Join Beige at side edge, 5 rows down from upper right hand corner of square and work in sc to lower corner changing color to Camel to match center motif.
Row 2: Keeping to colors as established, work sc in front loop of each St across, dec 1 St across last 2 sc at end of row (underarm).
Row 3: Keeping to colors, sc in back loop of each St across.
Rows 4 through 7: Repeat Rows 2 and 3. Fasten off. Work other Side to correspond, reversing shaping.

SLEEVES: With Camel, ch 26.
Row 1: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 2 through 8: Repeat Row 1.
Row 9: Working in back loop of each St, work across in sc, increase 14 sts evenly spaced across--39 sc.
Row 10: Working in front loop, sc in each sc ,across.
Row 11: Working in back loop, sc in each sc across.
Rows 12 and 13: Repeat Rows 10 and 11.
Row 14: Keeping to pattern as established, inc 1 St each edge. Repeat Rows 10 through 14 until there are 57 sts. At the same time, when 7" (8") from beginning, change to Beige. Keeping to pattern, work until 18" (19") from beginning.

Shape Cap: SI St over first 3 sts, work to last 3 sts. Turn. Dec 1 St each edge every other row 11 times. At the same time, when 10 rows from beg of cap shaping, change to Fisherman. When all decreases have been made, fasten off.

FINISHING: At lower, edge of front and back, with Camel work 50 sc evenly spaced across for 7 rows. Fasten off. Steam each piece lightly. Sew side seams and right shoulder.

Neckband: Join Fisherman at left corner of front and work same as yoke pattern, working cable over cable pattern for 5 rows. Fasten off.
       Along opening at left shoulder and neck edge of back with Fisherman work 3 rows sc. Along front shoulder edge work 4 rows sc, working 4 buttonholes (2 at neck band edge, 2 evenly spaced on shoulder) on Row 3 as follows: work ch 2, skip 2 sts at each marker.
       Overlap front crochet trim over back, sew at armhole edge. Sew buttons in place. Sew sleeve seams, sew sleeves in place gathering fullness at top of sleeve.
