SGI Origin 3800 Hardware

K2 - SGI Origin 3800

The SGI Origin 2000 (k2.tamu.edu) arrived at Texas A&M University on May 29th. The system is currently up and running with 48 CPUs and 48GB of main memory. The system is also configured with 1200GBs of disk space. The Origin 3800 is a distributed memory cc-NUMA architecture based machine.

K2 is composed of 12 node cards. Each node card in turn is composed of 4 R14000 processors running at 500 MHZ and each node card also has 4GBs of memory. Each processor has associated with it 8MB of L2 cache. While the main memory is distributed across the 12 node boards, it is accessible to and shared by all the processors. To a processor, main memory appears as a single addressable space. However the latency for memory access by a processor to memory on the node board on which the processor resides is less than the latency for memory access by a processor to memory on a node board different from the one on which the processor resides. It is from this disparity in memory access times that the acronym NUMA (non-uniform memory access) derives.

Aside from 2 system drives, all drives on the system are attached to fibre channel (100 MB/s) RAID controllers which allow for faster data throughput. The system is currently attached to a gigabit ethernet network and will eventually be connected to a ATM network.
