MATERIALS:

  • BERNAT MEADOWSPUN (1 oz. pull-skeins) - 12 (13-14)
  • BERNAT-Aero crochet hook No. 1 (Canadian Cotton Crochet Hook No. 0) OR ANY SIZE HOOK WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE.

PATTERN STITCH: (see below for a detailed picture of the stitch) Multiple of 6 sts plus 5.
Row 1: Work 7 dc in first open shell, skip ch 2, work 8 dc (a shell) in each open shell across row, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sl st in each of next 5 dc, 1 dc in same at as last sl st, * ch 2, work 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc (an open shell) in 5th dc of next shell, repeat from * across row, ch 3, turn. Repeat these 2 rows for pattern stitch.

NOTE: This dress has been planned for 38(38-1/2 - 39) inch finished length to shoulder. If you wish your dress to be longer or shorter, work more or less inches before first decrease row.

___BACK: Ch 167(185-203) sts to measure 17-1/2(19-20-1/2) inches.
___Row 1: 1 dc in 5th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 5 ch sts, work 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc (open shell) in next ch st, repeat from * across row, ch 3, turn - 28(31-34) open shells. Work even in pattern st until piece measures approximately 15 inches, ending with Row 2.

___DECREASE ROWS: Row 1: Work 3 dc in first open shell, work in pattern st, ending 4 dc in last open shell, ch 5, turn.
___Row 2: 1 dc in first dc of half shell, * ch 2, work an open shell in 5th dc of next shell, repeat from *, ending an open shell in top of turning ch of last half shell, ch 3, turn.
___Row 3: 1 dc in first open shell, work in pattern st, ending 2 dc in last open shell, ch 1, turn.
___Row 4: Sl st in each of next 7 dc, ch 5, 1 dc in same st as last sl st, work in pattern st, ending last open shell in 5th dc of last shell, ch 3, turn - 2 shells decreased. Work even in pattern st on 26 (29-32) shells for 6 rows.

___Repeat DEC ROWS 1 through 4.
___Work even for 4 rows.
___Repeat DEC ROWS 1 through 4.
___Work even for 2 rows.
___Repeat DEC ROWS 1 through 4.
___Work even on 20(23-26) shells until entire piece measures approximately 25 inches, ending with Row 1 of pattern, ch 5, turn.

___INCREASE ROWS: Row 1: Work 1 dc in first shell, ch 2, work an open shell in 5th dc of same shell, work in pattern st, ending with an open shell in 5th dc of last shell, ch 2, an open shell in top st of turning ch, ch 3, turn.
___Row 2: 3 dc in first open shell, work in pattern st, ending 4 dc in last open shell, ch 5, turn.
___Row 3: Work 1 dc in first dc of half shell, ch 2, work in pattern st, ending with an open shell in last st of half shell, ch 3, turn - 2 shells increased.

___Work even in pattern st on 22(25-28) shells for 3 rows. Repeat the last 6 rows once. Then repeat INCREASE ROWS 1 through 3. Work even on 26(29-32) shells until entire piece measures 31 inches, ending with Row 1 of pattern st, ch 1, turn.

___SHAPE ARMHOLES: Sl st across 2 (3-3) shells, sl st to 5th dc of next shell, work in pattern as established to last 2 (3-3) shells, ch 3, turn. Repeat DEC ROWS 1 through 4 one (1-2) times. Work even in pattern st on 20(21-22) shells until armholes measures approximately 5-1/4 (5-3/4 - 6-1/4 ) inches, ending with Row 1 of pattern st, ch 1, turn.

___SHAPE NECK: LEFT BACK: Row 1: Work across 6 (6-7) shells, ch 3, turn.
___Row 2: Work in pattern st to end of row, ch 1, turn.
___Row 3: Work in pattern st across 5(5-6) shells, ch 3, turn.
___Row 4: Work in pattern st, ch 1, turn.
___Row 5: Work in pattern st across 4(4-5) shells, ch 3 turn.
___Row 6: Work in pattern st. Armhole should measure approximately 7-1/4 (7-3/4 - 8-1/4) inches. Fasten off.

___RIGHT BACK: Row 1: Join yarn at start of neck shaping, sl st loosely across 8 (9-8) centre shells, sl st to 5th dc of next shell, ch 5, 1 dc in same st as last sl st, work in pattern as established to end of row. Finish to correspond to left back, reversing all shaping.

___FRONT: Work to correspond to back until armholes measure approximately 3(3-1/2 - 3-1/2) inches, ending with Row 1 of pattern st -20(21-22) shells, ch 1, turn.

___SHAPE NECK: RIGHT FRONT: Row 1: Work across 8(8-9) shells, ch 3, turn.
___Row 2: Work in pattern st to end of row, ch 1, turn.
___Row 3: Work in pattern st across 7 (7 -8) shells, ch 3, turn.
___Row 4: Work in pattern st for 1 row, ch 1, turn.
___Row 5: Work in pattern st across 6(6-7) shells, ch 3, turn.

___Working in pattern st, dec 1/2 shell EVERY ROW at neck edge ONLY 4 times. Work even in pattern st on 4(4-5) shells until armhole measures approximately 7-1/4 (7-3/4 - 8-1/4 )inches, ending with Row 1 of pattern st. Fasten off.

___LEFT FRONT: Row 1: Join yarn at start of neck shaping, sl st loosely across 4(5-4) centre shells, sl st to 5th dc of next shell, ch 5, 1 dc in same st as last sl st, work in pattern as established to end of row. Finish to correspond to right front, reversing all shaping.

___BELT: TWISTED CORD: Cut 9 strands of yarn 5 times desired finished length. Double this yarn and fasten one end on a hook, so that it is firm. Twist the doubled strands tightly in one direction until it is very firm. HoldIng the loose end and the end from hook together, allow to wind together. Smooth out any knotted sections. Knot the loose ends.

___FINISHING: Sew underarm and shoulder seams by joining edges of shells ONLY. DO NOT MAKE a regular seam.

___BORDER: Round 1: With right side facing you, working around neckline, sc across top of each shell, working ch st between shells to keep work flat, join with sl st.
___Round 2: Work Row 2 of pattern st, but work ch 3 between open shells, join with sl st.
___Round 3: Work Row 1 of pattern st. Fasten off. Work same border around armholes, holding into desired size. Steam.
