McCall's Crochet, Step-By-Step Lesson for Beginners, 1971

SIZES: Directions for small size  (8-10). Changes for medium size (12)  are in parentheses. 
Body Bust Size: 31-1/2 "- 32-1/2 (34"). 
Blocked Bust Size: 33" (36"). 

MATERIALS: Knitting worsted,  8 (9) 4-oz. skeins. Crochet hook size  G. One yard 1" elastic. 

GAUGE: 9 sts = 2"; 7 rows = 2". 

PATTERN: Row 1 (wrong side):  Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 2, turn. 
Row 2: Hdc in each of first 3 sts, * bubble st in next st (to make bubble st: yo hook, insert hook in next  st, pull up a lp to measure 1/2" (yo  hook, pull up a lp to measure 1/2 " in  same st) 5 times, yo hook and  through 13 lps on hook, ch 1 tightly), hdc in each of next 7 sts, repeat from  * across, end last repeat hdc in each  of next 4 sts. Ch 2, turn. 
Row 3: Hdc in each st across, do not work in ch-1. Ch 2, turn. 
Row 4: Hdc in each of 7 hdc, work from first * on row 2, end hdc in each of last 8 sts. Ch 2, turn.
Row 5: Repeat row 3. Repeat rows 2-5 for pat, always working bubble st in center hdc between bubbles. To Bind Off: At beg of row, sl st loosely across specified sts, work in pat across; at end of row, leave specified number of sts unworked.
To Dec 1 St: Pull up a lp in each of 2 sts, yo and through 3 lps on hook.
Skirt Length Note: Skirt is planned for 16" length. For longer skirt, add required number of inches before first dec row. More yarn is needed for longer skirt.

SKIRT: BACK: Beg at lower edge, ch 90 (98). Work in pat having 88 (96) hdc on row 1 for 1". Check gauge; piece should measure 19-1/2" (21-1/2") wide. Keeping to pat, dec 1 st (see To Dec 1 St) each side of next row, then every 4th row 12 times more -- 62 (70) sts. Work even if necessary, until piece measures 16" from start, end wrong side. End off.

FRONT: Work same as back.

FINISHING: Steam-press pieces lightly; do not flatten pattern. With backstitch, sew side seams.

Waistband: Join yarn with a sl st in upper edge of side seam. Ch 5, dtr in next st, dtr in each st around upper edge, end sl st in first st. End off.

Scallop Edging: Join yarn in lower edge of side seam. * Sc in next st, sk next st, (hdc, 3 dc, hdc) in next st, sk next st, repeat from * around, end sl st in first st. End off. Cut elastic to waist measurement. Weave elastic through waistband. Sew ends securely.

BLOUSE: BACK: Beg at lower edge, ch 74 (82). Work in pat, having 72 (80) hdc on first row until piece measures 10" from start or desired length to underarm, end wrong side. Check gauge; piece should measure 16" (18") wide.

Shape Armholes: Keeping to pat, bind off (see To Bind Off) 4 (5) sts each side of next row. Dec 1 st each side every row 4 (5) times - 56 (60) sts. Work even until armholes measure 5-1/2" (6") above first row of armhole shaping, end wrong side.

Shape Neck and Shoulders: Keeping to pat, work 18 (19) sts, drop yarn; sk next 20 (22) sts, join another strand of yarn, finish row. Working on both sides at once, with separate strands of yarn, dec 1 st at each neck edge every row 4 times - 14 (15) sts. Work even until armholes measure 7" (7-1/2") above first row of armhole shaping. Bind off 3 sts each arm side every row 3 times - 5 (6) sts. End off.

FRONT: Work same as for back, shaping neck when armholes measure 3-1/2 " (4") above first row of armhole shaping.

SLEEVES: Beg at lower edge, ch 50 (58). Work in pat having 48 (56) hdc on first row until piece measures 3" from start or desired length to underarm, end wrong side. Check gauge; piece should measure 10-3/4 (12-1/2 ") wide.

Shape Cap: Keeping to pat, bind off 4 sts each side of next row. Dec 1 st each side every row 4 (5) times. Dec 1 st each side every 4th row 4 (5) times. Bind off 2 sts each side of next 2 (3) rows - 16 sts. End off.

FINISHING: Steam-press pieces. Sew shoulder seams; sew in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams.
Edging: From right side, work 1 rnd sc around neck edge, keeping work flat. Join with a sl st.
Next Rnd: Work same as scallop edging on skirt. End off. Work scallop edging around each sleeve edge to match neck.


STITCHES

Treble or Triple Crochet (tr): With 1 loop on hook put yarn over hook twice, insert in 5th chain from hook, pull loop through. Yarn over and draw through 2 loops at a time 3 times. At end of a row, chain 4 and turn. Chain 4 counts as first treble of next row.

Double Treble (dtr): Put yarn over hook 3 times and work off 2 loops at a time as for treble.

Treble Treble (tr tr): Put yarn over hook 4 times and work off 2 loops at a time as for treble.
