SIZES: Directions are for Small 8 to 10. Changes for Medium 12 to 14 are in parentheses.
MATERIALS: American Thread, Puritan Mercerized Crochet Cotton (250 yard balls), 15 (18) White. Crochet hook No. 1 or size to give gauge. 8 buttons, 2" belt buckle. 1-1/2 yard-1-1/2" grosgrain ribbon. Snaps.
GAUGE: 13 dc = 2". 3 rows = 1". Motif measures 5-1/2" in diameter.
NOTE: Skirt is worked with double strand of thread throughout.

MOTIF: Rnd 1: Ch 8, SI St in 4th ch from hook for picot, * ch 1, tr in first St of starting ch, ch 3, SI St in tr for picot, repeat from * 6 times, ch 1, join in base of first picot.
Rnd 2: Ch 14, dc over next ch-1 sp, * ch 11, dc over next ch-1 sp, repeat from * 5 times, ch 11, join in 3rd St of ch 14 at beg.
Rnd 3: Work 1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 5 tr, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc in each loop, join in first sc.
Rnd 4: SI St in each of first 2 sts, ch 1, sc in next St, * ch 7, skip 2 sts, sc in next St, ch 7, skip 2 sts, sc in next St, ch 2, skip 6 sts, sc in next St, repeat from * around, ending last repeat with SI St in first sc.
Rnd 5: SI St in each of first 3 sts of next loop, 1 sc, ch 3, 1 sc (picot) in next at of same loop, * ch 7, picot in center St of next loop (Note: all picots will be worked in center St of ch-7 loop), ch 5, picot in next loop, ch 7, picot in next loop, ch 13 (corner loop), picot in next loop, repeat from * once, ch 7, picot in next loop, ch 5, picot in next loop, ** ch 7, picot in next loop, repeat from * * 4 times, ch 7, join in first sc, cut thread.

Work 2nd motif in same manner joining to first motif in last rnd as follows: SI St in each of first 3 sts, picot in next St of same loop, ch 7, picot in next loop *, ch 2, join to the ch-5 loop after 2nd corner loop of first    motif (to join: drop loop from hook, insert hook in St to be Joined, pick up dropped loop and pull through St), ch 2 picot in next loop of 2nd motif, ch 3, Join to center St of next loop of first motif, ch 3, picot in next    loop of 2nd motif, ch 6, join to center St of comer loop of first motif, ch 6, picot in next loop of 2nd motif, ch 7, picot in next loop, ch 5, picot in next loop, ch 7, picot in next loop, ch 13, picot in next loop, ch 7, picot in next loop, ch 5, picot in next loop, * ch 7, picot in next loop, repeat from * 4 times, ch 7, join in first sc, cut thread.

Work 7 (8) more motifs, joining in same manner.

SKIRT: With wrong side of motifs facing, working along straight edge, ch 12 (14), sc in center St of ch-13 loop, * ch 9, sc in center St of next loop, ch 6, sc in center St of next loop, ch 6, sc in center St of next loop, ch 9, sc in  joining of motifs, repeat from * across row ending last repeat sc in center St of ch-13 loop, turn.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), ** 9 dc over next loop, dc in next sc, * 6 dc over next loop, dc in next sc, repeat from * once, 9 dc over next loop, dc in next sc, repeat from ** across, end with 1 dc in each of 12 (14) sts of ch, cut thread, do not turn.
Row 3: Attach thread in 3rd St of ch 3, working in back loop of sts only, ch 3, 1 dc in each of the next 9 dc, * skip next 2 dc, 1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc (shell) in next St, skip next 2 dc, 1 dc in each of the next 7 dc, repeat from * across, end 1 dc in each of last 3 dc, turn.
Row 4: Ch 3, working in both loops of sts, 1 dc in each of next 9 cc, * ch 2, sc in center St of next shell, ch 2, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc, repeat from * across, end 1 dc in each of last 3 dc, turn.
Row 5: Ch 3, work 1 dc in each dc and a shell in each sc, turn. Repeat rows 4 and 5 for pattern.
Row 6: Working in pat, work a buttonhole as follows: Ch 3, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, ch 2, skip 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 4 sts, complete row.
Row 7: Work in pat, working a dc in each of 2 sts of buttonhole. Work a buttonhole every 3" up entire skirt. Work in pat for 4-1/2 (2-1/2)" ending with pat row 5.
Begin Dec: Row 1: Work across first 6 (7) dc stripes, shell in next sc, * 1 dc in each dc to within last 2 dc of next strips, dec over next 2 sts (to dec: keep last loop of each st on hook, work 1 dc in each of 2 sts, thread over and draw through all loops on hook), ch 2, sc in center st of next shell, place a marker in this st, ch 2, dec over first 2 sts of next stripe, 1 dc in each remaining st of same stripe *, continue in pat across next 12 (13) dc stripes, shell in next sc, repeat between *'s once, complete row.
Row 2: Work in pat across row, there will be 1 dc less in stripes before and after markers.
Next 10 rows: Repeat the last 2 rows alternately.
Row 13: Work across 6 (7) stripes, * ch 2, sc in center st of next shell, ch 2, dc In dc, repeat from * once, ch 2, sc in center of next shell, ch 2, work across 12 (13) stripes, ** ch 2, sc in center st of next shell, ch 2, dc in dc, repeat from ** once, ch 2, sc in center of next shell, ch 2, complete row.
Row 14: Work across first 6 (7) stripes, * shell in next sc, repeat from * twice, work in pat across next 12 (13) stripes, ** shell in next sc, repeat from ** twice, complete row.
Row 15: Work across first 6 (7) stripes, * ch 2, sc 'in center of next shell, repeat from * twice, ch 2, work across 12 (.13) stripes, ** ch 2, sc in center of next shell, repeat from ** twice, ch 2, complete row.
Row 16: Work across 6 (7) stripes, dc in next sc, shell in next sc, dc in next sc, work across 12 (13) stripes, dc in next sc, shell in next sc, dc in next sc, complete row.
Row 17: Work across 6 (7) stripes, ch 2, skip next dc, sc in center of shell, ch 2, skip next dc, work across 12 (13) stripes, ch 2, skip next dc, sc in center of shell, ch 2, skip next dc, complete row (this completes the dec of 1 strips on each side of markers).
Row 18: Work in pattern. Repeat from first dec row through row 18 twice. Working across 1 stripe less on each side of marker in each repeat:
For Medium Only: Repeat the first 10 dec rows.
Next row (For Small and Medium Sizes): 1 sc in each dc and 3 sc in each ch 3 loop, cut thread and fasten off.

FINISHING: EDGING: With wrong side of motifs facing, attach thread in corner loop of first motif already worked in, ch 4, sc in same loop, * ch 7, sc in next loop, * between *'s 8 times more, ** sc in first free loop of next motif, repeat between *'s 5 times more, repeat from ** across motifs ending repeat between *'s 9 times, ch 4, sc in same loop, turn.
Row 2: Ch 3, 4 dc in first loop, * dc in next sc, 7 dc over next loop, * repeat between *'s 7 times more, ** dc in next sc, 5 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc in next loop, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 5 dc in loop of next motif, repeat between *'s 4 times, repeat from ** across row ending repeat between *'s 8 times, 4 dc in loop, dc in sc, working up front of skirt, work 2 dc over side of each row, cut thread, do not turn.
Row 3: Attach thread in first st, ch 7, sl st in 4th st from hook for picot, (ch 1, dc in same st as beg of ch 7, ch 3, sl st in dc for picot) twice, * ch 3, skip next 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip next 3 dc, in next dc (dc, picot, ch 1) twice, dc, picot, (picot shell made), repeat from * 7 times, ** ch 3, skip next 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip next 3 dc, keeping last loop of each st on hook 1 dc in next dc, skip next 6 sts, 1 dc in next st, thread over and work off all loops at one time, ch 3 picot, (ch 3, skip 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip 3 dc, picot shell in next dc) 4 times, repeat from ** across row; then work picot shells with ch 3, sc, ch 3 between shells up entire front, cut thread. With right side of skirt facing, attach thread in front loop of first dc of row 2 of skirt above motifs. Work between *'s of row 3 of edging across row.

BELT: Row 1: Ch 31, shall in 6th ch from hook, * skip 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 7 sts, skip 2 sts, shell in next st, repeat from * once, dc in last st, ch 5, turn.
Row 2: Sc in shell, * ch 2, 1 dc in each dc, ch 2, sc in center of shell, repeat from * once, ch 2, dc in 3rd st of ch at end, turn.
Next row: Ch 3, shell in sc, * 1 dc in each dc, shell in next sc, repeat from * once, dc in 3rd st of ch-5, turn. Repeat last 2 rows until belt measures about 15-1/2" more than desired waist measurement. Work edge same as lower edge of skirt across each short end. Sew belt to skirt to within last stripe at each end, allowing 15-1/2" to extend beyond right front edge. Fold and sew other edge to skirt. Sew buckle to belt. Sew grosgrain ribbon on wrong side along each front edge of skirt. Cut buttonholes and finish with buttonhole st. Sew buttons in position. Sew snap at upper and lower edges. Work between *'s of row 3 of edging across row.
