Pete Brewton

This year there is one investigative journalist who is by far in the lead of all others in recognition of his work by the nation's top researchers and investigators and by his accumulation of honors and awards. In this last year Pete Brewton of the Houston Post has been awarded the Katie Award given by the Dallas Press Club for best investigative story on organized crime, first place award in the Regional United Press International Contest and awards from the Houston Press Club too numerous to mention.

DATE: Sunday 3/11/90 Page A1 Houston Post "A failed Colorado Savings and Loan whose board of directors included a son of President Bush was part of an intricate web of federally insured financial institutions that had business links to organized crime figures and CIA operatives, the Houston Post has learned.

Four of the largest borrowers at Silverado Savings and loan, a Denver Thrift that collapsed in Dec. 1988, at an estimated cost to the Federal Government of $1 billion, had connections to convicted Louisiana mob associate Herman K. Beebe Sr., or to Robert L. Corson, a Houston developer and alleged CIA operative. "

The Houston Post, during an 8-month investigation into the role of fraud in S&L; failures, has found numerous links between organized crime, smuggling, money laundering and covert aid to the Nicaraguan Contras. "

It is little wonder that Pete Brewton should outshine all his colleagues. Background qualifications such as Pete's are rarely found among journalists. B.S. Rice University 1973, Magna Cum Laud, M.S. Astronomy New Mexico State with an M.S. in International business from the prestigious American Graduate School of International Business. It is no wonder Brewton has succeeded in untangling the endless maze of fraudulent business transactions of failing S&Ls; and in ferreting out the concealed involvements of the CIA.
