Bomb hoax forces jet back to L.A.

LOS ANGELES -- An American Airlines flight bound for Mazatlan was forced to return to Los Angeles International Airport early Saturday morning because of a bomb threat.

A sweep of the plane produced no explosive devices, said FBI spokesman Matt McLaughlin.

"At this point, we're just calling it a hoax," he said.

After their baggage was screened, passengers left on another plane about 8:35 a.m.

Flight 889, carrying 115 people, left LAX shortly after 1 a.m. and returned about two hours later, said LAX spokesman Tom Winfrey.

Federal aviation officials believe the threat was made by a caller on a cell phone.
