11/19/01 - A Handspring or Palm Merger or Buyout? Hey, irrational exuberance seems to be in the air again, and the stock prices for Palm and Handspring are surging on speculation that one or the other (or both) may be ready to merge or be purchased by another company. One rumor had Handspring and Palm merging, another had either Dell or IBM buying Palm (interesting, since IBM was one of the first Palm licensees), and one joker from Wall Street even thought that Microsoft could be a buyer. Don't count on that last one... Handspring has lopped another $40 off of the Visor Deluxe, bringing the price down to $129. For Christmas they're also giving you your choice of gifts! Click the banner at the top of the page to see the deals. 11/12/01 - New Version of WordSmith, More Comdex News BlueNomad annoucned a new version of their WordSmith product for Palm OS today. Version 2.1 provides a spell checker, thesaurus, and virtual file support. There's also full support for color, font selection, and more! It'll ship in late November for $29.95 with free upgrades to registered users. In other news (hopefully you read the PCPocket Blog the other day!), Carl Yankowski quit as CEO of Palm. Maybe now they can actually get back to being an industry leader... Be sure to visit the PCPocket Blog for more late-breaking news from Comdex and other sources! 11/7/01 - A Palm For Your Wrist? The people at Fossil Watches have announced the Wrist PDA, a watch that you beam content to from your Palm OS device. Expected to ship in early 2002, it has enough RAM to carry a lot of your PIM info, but no way to enter stuff. No idea on what the price will be... It sounds like nobody from Handspring will be gracing the stage on Fox's tech show with Neal Cavuto. It seems he blasted the new Treo communicators while doing an interview with Donna Dubinsky on October 15th. I read the interview - he was really quite an asshole, but then I expect that from the Fox Network. Handspring says they'll never accept an invitation from Mr. Cavuto again... 11/5/01 - Palm OS 4.1 for Palm Vx/V/III coming soon! It's about time - the upgrade for your Palm Vx/V/III is finally here. Palm announced that on November 15th they will begin to ship OS 4.1 upgrades to users so you can take advantage of the new features. Frankly, those features are long overdue and not that impressive - an ink-based notepad, better support for using GSM phones to check e-mail and surf the web wirelessly, and better security. Unless you get the special e-mail offer, you'll get to pay $39.95 for the privilege... Steven Sande, Editor |
