Dark Horizons posted this link which must surely be the most creative Harry Potter poster out there - it's not just ON a train, it pretty much IS the train. In Singapore.

VideoTropic.com reports that the DVD for Harry Potter is scheduled for April 2002:
Harry Potter to DVD: Warner Brothers is currently scheduling an April, 2002 DVD release for the 2-DVD Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (a widescreen version is planned, as well as fullscreen). This is good news on two fronts: first, the fact that Warners will be offering a widescreen version acknowledges that the "fullscreen-only" decision may have been rescinded, and second -- a multidisc set means no snapper case.

Great article from the LA Times about critics who bash the movie.

One has to wonder if this unified front is not more revelatory of the monolithic nature of movie criticism than of the merits of the movie. Clearly, none of the critics was sitting next to a child, inner or outer, while watching it

yeowch. Great, well thought, lucid piece.

Pirate copies of the Harry Potter movie in Asia: According to Bloomberg News, bootleg video discs of the movie, due for its Asian release in Malaysia and Singapore on Thursday, are selling for $1.20 to $1.30. Low-grade copies filmed in movie theaters with pocket digital video cameras arrived in Malaysia's capital Sunday and in China's on Monday, street sellers said. "This is a nightmare. Within a week, all of Asia will be flooded with illegal copies," said a Hong Kong representative of the MPAA. The appearance of illegal copies so soon after Friday's premiere shows how organized video pirates are. 20th Century Fox Malaysia expects to "lose 20% to 30% of the box office taking on this one."

Los Angeles Times sports columnist Mike Penner looked deep into his crystal ball and tells us the fascinating story of Quidditch from the year 2028 - must read :-)
In late 2002, Nike bought out Nimbus and undersold rival manufacturer Firebolt by its use of cheap child labor in southeastern Asia. When Tiger Woods proved more adept at driving the Golden Snitch than catching it, Nike signed Potter to the most lucrative endorsement contract in sports history, making the lad the first $1 billion-a-year athlete

For the next two decades, it was nothing but glory and championships and sequels for Potter, who in 2022 was named Greatest Athlete of the Century by ESPN over the protests of several sports historians arguing that the 21st century still had 78 years to go. ESPN's response: "It's our scoop."

Jubilant Warner Bros. executives reported that "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" - playing on an unprecedented 8,200 screens in 3,672 U.S. locations - had far surpassed the $72.1 three-day opening record set in 1997 by "The Lost World: Jurassic Park." "There were 15 possible industry records and every one of them was shattered," Dan Fellman, Warners' head of distribution, told The New York Post.

Forbes Magazine commented on these numbers: "the constant setting of box-office records is a function of changes in the movie business and is not owed to merit or even the popularity of the record-setters." Harry Potter opened on about one out of every four screens in America. "In 1997, when the old three-day record was set, the average movie theater ticket price was $4.59. By 2000, the price had risen 17% to $5.39.

(If you're thinking it's been a long time since you bought a movie ticket for under $6, you're not alone. N.A.T.O. admits that the ordinary ticket price in every large city is at least $8.50, but it says the average price is driven down by matinees and by child and senior discounts).

A crush for the older set is emerging from the movie - the Harry Potter for Grown Ups-Movie list is abuzz with swoons. And it's all for Sean Biggerstaff, a.k.a. Oliver Wood. The Snitch put up a good page of his pics. Daniel, Rupert, we love you - but Sean's, well, not 12. :-)
