Welcome to the
911Peace Network
A "Justice, Not War" Primer
and guide to this site
We share the country's shock and horror at the events of 9/11, and we grieve deeply for the victims of these criminal acts and for those who lost friends and family, and for the country that has lost something more intangible. We feel strongly that the perpetrators of these crimes must be brought to justice through legal means, that this is a necessary first step -- but we do take issue with the ways in which this justice is being ostensibly pursued, on both moral and practical grounds. We also feel that true justice, as well as security and peace for all of us, requires far more than punishing these criminals, and that even if military action, expanded government intelligence powers, and ceding of certain civil liberties were necessary (a position we do not hold), they would by no means be sufficient.
Voices of dissent have been rare in the government, but Barbara Lee (D-CA) provided a shining example of healthy democratic dissent early on in the crisis, and now Jim McDermott (D-WA) has joined in questioning the methods being advocated and used by the administration in dealing with the problem of international terrorism. Voices of dissent have been at least as absent from the major media; on the contrary, they have been willingly and explicitly relinquishing their rights and their duties to report fully and impartially on what is happening in this country and around the world. Since democracy requires an informed citizenry capable of dissent and debate, we feel it critical to present alternative perspectives and resources here.
We urge all to remember that dissent and debate are central to the American culture and political life, and that quashing this right in the name of a fight for freedom is self-contradictory and counter-productive. We must not censor others' opinions, and we must not censor ourselves by remaining silent when we perceive a wrong. We are proud to be Americans, and to have the American rights of dissent and freedom of speech that we exercise here.
