Billboard Bits: Naughty By Nature, Janet, So Solid Crew

NaughtyVeteran hip-hop act Naughty By Nature's debut for new label TVT, "iicons," is due March 5. The set finds longtime members Treach and Vinnie collaborating with Method Man and Redman on "Rock'N'Roll," Pink on "What U Wanna Do," and Carl Thomas on "Naughty by Nature." Rotten Raskalz and Road Dawgs also make appearances.

"It's a Naughty record from start to finish," Treach said in a statement. "It's still our formula. We worked with producers who we felt could keep our music gritty and street, while at the same time make music that will be able to move hip-hop fans around the world."

The set will be the follow-up to the 1999 Arista set "19 Naughty Nine Nature's Fury," which debuted at No. 9 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and at No. 22 on The Billboard 200. The group is perhaps best known for its early '90s top-10 crossover hits "O.P.P." (No. 6) and "Hip Hop Hooray" (No. 8).

JanetJanet Jackson's "All for You" (Toshiba/EMI) was chosen as record of the year yesterday (Dec. 3) at the annual Japan Radio Popular Disks Awards ceremony, which honors non-Japanese acts, Billboard Bulletin reports. Jackson was also named best female vocalist at the Tokyo event, which was sponsored by the Japan Radio Hit Research Committee. The committee represents 34 private AM radio stations throughout Japan.

Eminem (Universal Music K.K.) was named best male vocalist, while Destiny's Child (Sony Music Entertainment Japan) won for best vocal duo or group. Michelle Branch (Warner Music Japan) was named brightest hope. "There You'll Be" (Warner Music Japan), as performed by Faith Hill on the "Pearl Harbor" soundtrack, was chosen as the best screen theme music. Universal Music K.K. was awarded the best promotion prize for its campaigns on behalf of foreign music.

Solid CrewAlmost half the dates of So Solid Crew's upcoming U.K. tour have been canceled, in the wake of shootings last month during the garage collective's performance at London's Astoria venue. It appears that several promoters have pulled out of the tour, which also features Oxide & Neutrino and is due to start tomorrow (Dec. 5) in Norwich. Of the 11 planned gigs, five -- in Cardiff, Leicester, Cambridge, Liverpool, and London -- have been canceled.

"The bands themselves are shocked at this turn of events ... and they have made it clear that they abhor violence," reads a statement from the artists' publicists.

On Nov. 1, two men were allegedly shot early during the group's performance in London. A statement issued jointly by record company Ministry of Sound and the Astoria venue says the act was "not in any way involved" in the disturbance. The rappers added that they "want to make it clear that they abhor violence and have made it clear on their record that they want the violence to stop."

So Solid Crew hit No. 1 on the U.K. singles chart in August with the track "21 Seconds." The group won best U.K. garage act and best newcomer honors at the U.K.'s annual MOBO Awards in October.
