Video game review/Elevating the ordinary
`Jak and Daxter' brings animation, 3-D and visual appeal to new levels of precision
Originality is scarce in most forms of entertainment. The best that can be said in many cases -- particularly about video games -- is that a number of familiar elements are put together in a fresh way. The basics may be the same old thing, but a certain verve, craftsmanship or little twist makes all the difference.

Small music label a big player in blues
ALLIGATOR RECORDS CARVED OUT ITS NICHE 30 YEARS AGO
CHICAGO -- The owner of what may be the world's best-known blues record label has a corner office with a view. Similarities to a record company mogul end there, however.

THEATER REVIEW
Frothy French farce amuses, but this `Flea' lacks bite
A classic farce, Georges Feydeau's ``A Flea in Her Ear'' was the height of fashion in belle époque France. Phallic symbols, slapstick and not-so-sly innuendo pepper this play from 1907, which bounces from one delightfully naughty misunderstanding to another.

Let's hear it for the actors who make small parts great
In the corners of even the most dreadful TV series, you can find a little glimmer of light in the form of acting newcomers who do enough with supporting roles that they command attention.

Comedy/How's your laugh life?
IN TONIGHT'S COMEDY EXTRAVAGANZA IN PALO ALTO, 12 COMEDIANS GET THEIR JOLLIES AND GIVE YOU YOURS
For some, making other people laugh is as basic a need as sleep or sex. For wannabe stand-up comedians, in particular, the drive to elicit yucks can be so consuming, there's rarely room for such indulgences as full-time jobs or significant others.

Documentary tries to solve Glenn Miller disappearance
LONDON -- It has been one of the most enduring mysteries of entertainment history. On the night of Dec. 15, 1944, American big-band leader Glenn Miller left an air base in southeast England to entertain U.S. soldiers in Paris. Within minutes, his plane had disappeared in fog and Miller was never seen again.

Let dogs stop and have some fun
Do you power-walk your dog? I see so many people rushing their dogs down the street and I can almost hear what the dogs are thinking: Hey, wait, wait. Let me sniff, will ya?

Challenge children for kindness
DEAR ANN: Last year, you used a letter from Martin Luther King III, challenging children in grades K-12 to do acts of kindness and justice. I am an elementary schoolteacher in New York. As a result of that column, I registered my school for the Kindness & Justice Challenge, and over the two-week period of the Challenge, we collected over 3,000 documented acts of kindness.

Horoscope Sydney Omarr
Aldous Huxley: This famous Leo author wrote of a ``Brave New World.'' Aldous Huxley was a philosopher as well as author; he was ``friendly'' to astrology. He declared: ``Most people who attack astrology don't know anything about the subject or why they are attacking!'' He stated his belief that human personality survives bodily death. Aldous Huxley's writing was fascinating and prophetic.
