In her first novel, Mary T. Carlson skillfully brings two multi-generational and seemingly disparate stories together by the book’s end. One story begins with Cornish immigrants who come to southwestern Wisconsin to work in the lead mines during the early 19th Century. The other story begins with the bombing of England during World War II.

Mary T. Carlson grew up in the south of England. In 1947 she came to Wisconsin to live with her married sister. In 1948 she married her sister’s brother-in-law. Mary and her husband ran a Wisconsin dairy farm for twenty-three years, after which she worked as a medical secretary. In retirement, Mary has been active in her church and community and as a hospice volunteer; and enjoys her fifteen American descendants.
