At Cornell:
Murray is a big, physical player who can wreak havoc anywhere on the ice. Along with his defensive prowess, he was a big key to the Big Red’s power-play unit, scoring three of his five goals while with the man advantage, and he also provided numerous assists from the point. Murray battled with injuries all season long and missed a handful of games toward the end of the regular season. Early in the year he had three straight multiple-point games with two points against Yale and Princeton and three points in the Ohio State win. At the end of the year, he had an assist in each of the Big Red’s ECAC playoff games. He finished the year with 18 points on five goals and 13 assists. Doug had a tremendous freshman year and was a dominating force in the ECAC. He had three goals, with two of them coming on the power play. He was instrumental in the 4-0 shutout of St. Lawrence with a goal and an assist. Against Providence, he fired off 12 shots (the most by a Big Red player in a single game that year) and picked up an assist. He also had a key goal against St. Lawrence at Lake Placid, as the Big Red was down 2-0 before he found the back of the net. The staff expects him to be a more complete player this year and lead the team in all areas, including the power play and penalty kill. He is one of the most dominating, physical defensemen in college hockey and is sure to make an impact every time he steps on the ice. Murray was an eighth round National Hockey League draft selection of the San Jose Sharks in 1999.
