 Best Action Game of 2001

January 14, 2002

Two weeks ago, we all took a great big leap into the future, uh, present. 2002 is now upon us, and to celebrate the gaming goodness of 2001, we asked you guys to vote for the best games of the year.

Since we didn't want to influence you unduly (we know how much you rely on our *ahem* expert opinions), we decided to keep our own nominations a secret. Well, the voting is now over, and we're ready to unveil our picks as well as yours.

Over the next week we'll be unveiling the top picks for 2001 in a variety of categories. Not surprisingly, there's a lot of crossover among them, but sometimes we didn't always see eye-to-eye. The great thing is that we're giving awards based on your picks as well, so your picks will get the recognition they deserve.

Below you'll find the cream of the crop in gaming, and if you haven't had a chance to check out any of the games mentioned below, you owe it to yourself to pick them up and give them a play.

Editors' Choice: Grand Theft Auto III
Publisher: Rockstar Games
Developer: DMA

The Skinny: Grand Theft Auto III doesn't just make the jump from 2D to 3D, it brings an enormous amount craft, story-telling, humor, and maturity to the PlayStation 2, and in many ways, it cracks open the action genre to new possibilities. It's a racing game, an action game, a thug-emulator, a story about a bad guy who's been betrayed, and who works his way up through the cruelest, most sinister veins of society, and on every level, at every turn, it's relentlessly, surprisingly, undeniably fun.

Runner-Ups (tie):
Devil May Cry
Twisted Metal: Black

Readers' Choice: Grand Theft Auto III
Publisher: Rockstar Games
Developer: DMA Design

What the Readers Thought: The unanimous vote amongst the readers was Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto III. With 66.9% of the readers voting for GTA3, the second place winner (Devil May Cry, 22.5%) wasn't even close. We might have guessed based your vote purely on the Message Board posts on GTA3 (the highest on total on our boards), but the action of voting really puts a point on it. On this one, us Editor-type folk agree whole-heartedly with you guys: GTA3 is the King of Action. Full stop.

Runner-Up:
Devil May Cry
