RUSSELL ROBERTSON had his best year of football in 2000 and attributed it to the fact that the Melbourne selection committee showed more belief in him.

Up until that point he had questioned his own role in the team as he spent so much time as an interchange player.

Drafted in 1996 he was de-listed before the 1997 season even started.

He had the safety net of being placed on the rookie list.

He had come from interstate and found himself alone and feeling rejected in the big city.

He drifted along in the reserves until given free licence to play at centre half-forward and take chances.

By the end of the season he was reinstated on the senior list after Dean Irving retired .

In 2000 he started in defence, and then ended up back in attack.

He aimed to score more than 40 goals for the year and achieved that target. He said that was due to better use of his energy.
