Lay quits top post at Enron
Kenneth Lay, chief executive officer of Enron Corp., announced Wednesday, that he is resigning from the top post of the bankrupt energy trading company.

Ken Lay resigned Wednesday as chairman and chief executive officer of Enron at the request of the committee representing the company's creditors. Lay, who will stay on the board of directors, oversaw the company's growth from a staid pipeline business into an energy powerhouse
that dealt in natural gas, electricity and other commodities.

Houston residents got good news Wednesday, thanks to the continued drop in natural gas prices. Reliant Energy Entex is reducing the average Houston residential winter natural gas bill by 22 percent.
- Despite charges, Dynegy reports record profits
Dynegy said Wednesday its fourth-quarter earnings were whittled down by special charges mostly related to its exposure to Enron and an aborted merger with it, but the full year was a record-breaker.

Kmart Corp. will likely focus on rural and suburban areas where competition from other discount retailers is stiff, analysts say, in finding hundreds of stores to close under its massive Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring.

Exxon Mobil Corp., the biggest publicly traded oil company, and rival Amerada Hess Corp. said Wednesday that fourth-quarter profit fell as energy prices and refining margins tumbled. Sunoco and Kerr-McGee Corp. had losses.
