I also received my copy of Hayley's latest CD about a week after its official release. I enjoyed it very much. She does an excellent job on all the songs on the CD. I just wish there were more songs. Her sister Sophie does a pretty good back up job as well, particularly on "Do You Hear What I Hear?" I would recommend it to Charlotte's fans as she is almost as good as Charlotte and just needs an audience bigger than New Zealand.

My copy of My Gift To You arrived today (26/11/2001) having been posted out to me on 21st. Five days to come half way round the world is pretty good going. Opus CDs show yet again how efficient they are. I've played it all the way through twice now and absolutely love it.

"Almost as good as Charlotte". That comment comes out again. Charlotte is unique in her own way. Hayley is too. There is no comparison, so "almost as good as" cannot be voiced. Hayley is a fantastic entertainer and needs no comparison with anyone.

Hayley's new CD is so good that if anyone on this forum doesn't buy it, they will be missing out on a great musical treat.

For Hayley's CDs, I recommend that you go to http://www.opuscds.com and take it from there.

Cheers,
Keith.

IMHO, Hayley Westenra is every bit as amazing as Charlotte Church. The two singers are neck and neck as far as vocal talent goes. I think many of Charlotte's most devoted fans would be just as enchanted by Hayley if they had her actual CDs which bring her voice out so much better than the mp3 versions.

Yes, every bit as amazing, though distinctly different in so many ways. It's intriguing that they've now recorded about six songs in common, but each of these songs is such a different interpretation.

To my ears, Charlotte owns the definitive "Pie Jesu." But Hayley's "Ave Maria" (Bach's) and Amazing Grace take the prize. What "Carrickfergus" is to Charlotte's latest album, "Pokarekare Ana" is to Hayley's -- each a romantic ethnic love song, but as difficult to compare as Celt to Maori.

We're so fortunate to have them both.

Charlotte belongs to the world, and seems to blanket it. Outside NZ, Hayley is still largely our secret. Both seem gifted not only in voice but in their distinctive personalities -- both well grounded and supported by loving families.

Hayley's newest album, though, raises an interesting distinction. Hayley's partner in song on the new CD, younger sister Sophie, clearly has talent of her own. Where could this lead? Wherever it goes, count me along for the full ride.

Well, I now have my second Hayley CD safe in hand. Shipped to US by NETCD in record time. I have given it a good listen and recommend it to all. I choose not to compare Hayley and Charlotte; I find there voices and to a degree their styles to be different from one another. They bring something different to the table for me. Hayley's new CD has better sound and backing than her first and Hayley's voice has matured to the better. She has a very pure sweet tone. I absolutely love Pokareana. For some reason on this site Over the Rainbow seems to be much maligned. I think Hayley does an endearing job on this song. This CD is very easy to buy, but you do need a credit card and turnaround is quite rapid. I also note that Lindsay is to bashful to tell us that he got a shout of thanks from Hayley on the liner notes. Lindsay, keep us informed.

Hayley's voice is so ethereal, it's transporting. You feel the mists of Islay, say, you don't just listen to the song.

And when you see the prosaic setting where these songs were actually recorded ...

... it's definitely a tribute to Hayley's artistry. I wonder if she concentrates on the melody, or tries to put hold some mental image to bring such feeling across in her songs?

Jill and Hayley were sorry they hadn't incuded Mark , for as WE all know I couldn't do all this without him and promised he will get a mention on the 'international' CD , out in about late Feb/March I would think

"My Gift To You" is into the top ten in NZ

This is great new, Lindsay.

The obvious question is whether this means that Hayley's work will be marketed more broadly. That would be great! She certainly deserves the audience.

Details! Details!

My guess would be world wide distribution early next year , I think the first two were just fine tuning

There is much discussion on TV talk shows and talk back radio of xmas CDs and Hayley is getting very favorable reviews and all agreeing she has a great future

an example of further updates to come is

I assume Hayley and family are still scheduled to travel to the U.S. in early February. I hope that with the signed record deal, she will get the media attention she deserves in the U.S. market. I'm sure many local and national TV shows would love to book an appearance by someone who is bound to be promoted (fortunately or unfortunately) as the next Charlotte Church. If she does make it to the Washington, D.C. area, I would certainly make an effort to see her perform and perhaps get one of her CDs autographed.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

BTW, in being signed by Decca, Hayley has succeeded where the Beatles failed.

In what has come to be regarded as "the biggest blunder in music history," Decca Records rejected signing the Beatles after they auditioned in 1962, saying, "We don't like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out."

Please correct me if I'm wrong but when has an artist ever thanked people who run their fansites by name , I have never seen this before but this is typical of Hayley and family who are humble and caring to a fault with Jill worrying about everyone and always trying to do the right thing by them .One cant help but think the family is under a lot of pressure as they juggle family school jobs and singing careers all at once , I've heard it mentioned several times now that Jill ".....had no sleep the night before..."
as she makes the many arrangements then criss crosses the country to take Hayley to the many engagements she is now doing , some in smaller centers which requires the travel by smaller aircraft , which by my own experience can be alittle scary !! I suggested that she needed a PA , Jill replied that , "that is what Sophie and Isaac are for , when they are not outside digging wholes in the lawn..... "

I cant help but think that life is going to get a whole lot busier in the Westenra house especially around this time of year , the whole family are off to Sydney where Hayley sings at the 'Carols in the Park' on the 22nd then they are all off to the US in Feb with many smaller functions and civic events in between.I wish them a safe journey and the increasing opportunities to come that will enable me to bring you all the news pictures and progress of one of NewZealands best kept secrets .

If you e-mail Janey at info@opuscds.com you may well be able to pay in US$ by check. That's how I have bought both of Hayley's CDs. I live in the UK and paid in British Pounds by check (That's "cheque" in the UK).

It's worth contacting her and asking.

Cheers,

p.s. Those music clips Lindsay is telling you about a brilliant. That's where I first heard Hayley singing and, I'm now a confirmed fan.

The sample of 'Pokarekareana' that is posted above suffers from only one problem, as we have said before, it's too short! Every time I listen to it, Hayley's beautiful voice just fills up the room.....(Sigh)...I suppose I will HAVE to send off for a copy of the CD. I can't be expected to live without a whole bunch of these lovely tunes, can I? Of all the wonderful and super-talented singers to whom we have been so generously allowed access on this site, IMHO, Hayley has the prettiest voice and the most engaging style.

To Keith S:

I just read your excellent review of "My Gift To You". The album is an unqualified masterpiece and you described its magic very thoughtfully.

Your comments about "Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire" are especially interesting. I felt right away that Hayley's version of this was the best I'd ever heard, and now I know why: her timing is unmistakeably perfect.

This is an addictive album if there ever was one.

Hi Fitzy

There was only 1000 made and it is called Walking in the Air , I was asked by the Westenra's not to post any tracks from this CD as it could be problematic with the Decca deal in negotiations but now that is over....

the first three tracks are 'amazing' and give clear indication of the great things to come

BTW, "Walking in the Air" is also the delightful featured song in an animated short feature entitled Snowman" that was nominated for an Academy Award back in 1982. (So it's a bit older than Hayley!) Anyhow, having access to that memorable song is what first made me pay attention to Hayley -- I hadn't heard her voice at that time.

You may see the video available in the Christmas selections this season, and if you do, grab it. It's terrific!

This was very hush hush when I spoke to Jill and Hayley last and I havent had an oppitunity to speak to them since the Decca deal was done but expect a theatrical rather than pop deviation if Hayley has anything to do with it , my feeling is Hayley has a wish to put all her talents to test ,I mean stage not film ,but as for the next CD content....more of the same , but better , if thats possable !!
