The Smithsonian Jazz Web Site uses a variety of multimedia files to enhance the visitor's interaction with Jazz. The site uses Real Media, Quick Time and Flash, each of which require that a specific plug-in is installed on the visitor's computer in order to be viewed online. Plug-ins are programs that work seemlessly with larger programs, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator, in order to display specific file types. There are a number of plug-ins available for free download on the Internet.

If you are having problems viewing a particular file, most likely you are missing the necessary plug-in for that file type. Below is a list of multimedia types present on the site with links to where you can do wnload the plug-ins necessary to view the file.

Audio  Audio
Audio files are currently available in Real Audio format.

Real Audio
In order to listen to Real Audio files, you must have the Real Player installed on your computer. You can download the Real Player for free at www.real.com.

Note: In order to receive the free player, make sure to click on the "RealPlayer 8 Basic" link near the middle, as opposed to the links for The RealPlayer Plus 8.0, which costs $29.99. You must then fill out a form in order to download the file.

Video  Video
Video clips on Smithsonian Jazz are available in Quick Time or Real Video formats.

Real Video
In order to view Real Video clips, you must install the Real Player on your computer. The Real Player is available for free download at www.real.com. You can download the Real Player for free at www.real.com. If you have already download the Real Player in order to listen to Real Audio files, you shouldn't need to re-install the player for video.

Quick Time
In order to view Quick Time files, you must have the Quick Time plug-in installed on your computer. You can download the Quick Timeplug-in free by visiting www.quicktime.com.

Macromedia Flash PlayerFlash
The Duke Ellington interactive class module was created using Flash 5. In order to view this lesson, you must have the Flash plug-in installed on your computer.

Flash Player
The Flash Player plug-in is available for free download by going to Macromedia's site at www.macromedia.com.

PDF  PDF
Certain documents on the Smithsonian Jazz site may be in Portable Document Format (PDF). PDFs allow web publishers to publish information in a print-type format.

PDF
In order to view PDF files, you will need to download the Adobe Acrobe Reader from Adobe's site at http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/main.html.
