Each motif measures 3-1/2 inches worked on No. E crochet hook.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
6 skeins Spinnerin Wintuk Fingering in main color, A
   4 skeins of contrast color, B
   4 skeins of contrast color, C
   4 skeins of contrast color, D
Crochet Hook Size E or size to give gauge above.

___First motif:
Using No. E hook and color D, ch 5. Join with a sl st to first ch to form circle.

___1st round: Using D, ch 3 to count as first dc, work 15 dc into circle. Join with a sl st to 3rd of first ch 3. 16 sts. Break off D.

___2nd round:
Attach C between 2 dc, (yo, insert hook between same 2 dc and draw up a loop) twice, yo and draw through all loops on hook, *(yo, insert hook between next 2 dc and draw up a loop) twice, yo and draw through all loops on hook, rep from * to end. Join with a sl st to first st. Break off C.

___3rd round: Attach B between any 2 sts, ch 2, work 2 dc into same place leaving last loop of each st on hook, yo and draw through all loops on hook, ch 2, *work 2 dc between next 2 sts leaving last loop of each st on hook, yo and draw through all loops on hook, ch 2, rep from * to end. Join with a sl st to 2nd of first ch 2.

___4th round: Using B, sl st over first st and into ch 2 loop, *ch 3, work 1 sc into next ch-2 loop, rep from * to end, ch 3. Join with a sl st to sl st which was worked into first ch 2 loop. Break off B.

___5th round: Attach A to any ch 3 loop, work ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) into same ch-3 loop to form corner, *ch 2, 1 sc into next ch 3 loop, (ch 3, 1 sc into next ch 3 loop) twice, ch 2, work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) into next ch 3 loop to form corner, rep from * twice more, ch 2, work 1 sc into next ch 3 loop, (ch 3, 1 sc into next ch 3 loop) twice, ch 2. Join with a sl st to 3rd of first ch 3. Fasten off. Run in all ends.

___Second motif: Work as given for first motif until 4th round has been completed.

___Joining round: Attach A to any ch 3 loop, work ch 8, 2 dc into same ch loop, ch 1, work 1 sc into 2nd of ch 8 at corner of first motif, ch 1, work 8 dc into same ch loop on second motif, (ch 1, insert hook from back of motif and work 1 sc into next ch loop of first motif, ch 1, 1 sc into next ch loop of second motif) 8 times, ch 1, 1 sc into next ch loop of first motif, ch 1, 8 dc into next ch loop of second motif, ch 1, work 1 sc into 2nd of ch 8 at corner of first motif, ch 1, 8 dc into same ch loop on second motif, cont working around second motif as given for first motif to end. Fasten off. Run in all ends. Make 140 motifs in all in this way, joining first 12 as shown to form first row, then joining further rows to first row by working as given in joining around along each edge where motifs touch, and skipping 4 center motifs as shown in diagram.

___Outer edging: Using No. E hook, attach A to one corner.

___1st round: Ch 1 to count as first sc, work 2 sc into same place, work in sc all around edges, working 8 sc into each corner. Join with a sl st to first ch.

___2nd - 5th rounds: Using A, ch 2 to count as first hdc, work 8 hdc into next center st of corner, work in hdc all around edges, working 3 hdc into each corner st. Join with a sl st to 2nd of first ch 2.

___6th round: Attach C and work as 2nd round.

___7th round: Using A, work 1 round sc, working 8 sc into each corner st. Join with a sl st to first ch. Fasten off.

___Neck edging: Using No. E hook, attach A at center front and work in rows instead of rounds as given for outer edging, leaving an opening at center front and skipping one st at each corner on every row. Fasten off.

___Finishing: Press under a damp cloth with a warm iron. Using No. E hook and 2 strands of C, make 2 crochet cords 12 in long, or make 2 twisted cords. Sew one to each front corner, then using C, make a pompon for end of each cord.
