Religious leaders fear yoga could harm children's development

Plans to introduce yoga in Slovak schools to relax pupils have caused religious and political uproar.

Education Minister Milan Ftacnik, a life-long yoga practitioner, wants to introduce yoga as an optional subject at elementary schools.

Four hundred school teachers have already been trained.

But Catholic and Protestant church leaders claim the plan could harm children's mental development as it would expose children to "Eastern philosophical systems".

And the Christian Democrats, part of the governing coalition, have threatened to leave the Cabinet because of the plan, Czech daily Hospodarske Noviny reports.
