  • Sidewalk Art Festival

    Saturday, August 24, Congress Street, Portland

    Once again Congress Street will close to vehicular traffic to transform itself into one of the most well-visited outdoor art galleries in New England. The 37th annual WCSH-6 Sidewalk Art Festival will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the downtown arts district. Planners expect over 50,000 people to enjoy the displays of paintings and photography that will be presented along Congress Street from Park Street to Monument Square and on Federal Street. Artists from New England, the Mid-Atlantic, the Mid-West and even Florida will be exhibiting thousands of completed works of art along the converted pedestrian walkway all day. Many artists will also be demonstrating their technique. In addition to selling their art, many participating artists will submit one piece for a juried competition.     'Paul Caponigro: New England Days'

    Through Sept. 8, Portland Museum of Art, Seven Congress Square, Portland

    Seventy-five gelatin silver prints are the focus of the newest Portland Museum of Art exhibit, "Paul Caponigro: New England Days," opening Saturday. One of the most important black and white photographers, Caponigro celebrated the beauty of New England. The exhibit includes photos taken at his Cushing, Maine, home. A "Meet the Artist" lecture by Caponigro will take place at 6:30 p.m. June 13 at the Eastland Park Hotel Ballroom. The museum is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays. Through Columbus Day the museum will also be open Mondays 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is $6 with discounts available and free on Fridays from 5-9 p.m. Call 773-ARTS.

    'Capturing Nureyev: James Wyeth Paints the Dancer'

    Through Jan. 5, The Farnsworth Art Museum and Wyeth Center, 16 Museum St., Rockland

    A close friendship with dancer Rudolf Nureyev provided American artist James Wyeth a subject worthy of his own artistic talent. Over almost 20 years, Wyeth was privy to performances, rehearsals and other opportunities to observe the dancer, who Wyeth has said was one of the his most difficult and demanding models. More than 35 paintings, as well as costumes, designs and some 60 photographs are the focus of "Capturing Nureyev: James Wyeth Paints the Dancer," opening at The Farnsworth Art Museum and Wyeth Center on Sunday. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily and Wednesdays until 7 p.m. Admission is $9 with discounts available and free to children age 17 and younger. Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. admission to the museum is free. For information call 596-6457.

    'Andrew Wyeth: Maine Paintings' and 'Andrew Wyeth: WWI'

    Through Oct. 27, Farnsworth Art Museum, 352 Main St., Rockland

    Recent never-before exhibited paintings by Andrew Wyeth are the featured works in one of two new exhibits about the artist opening Sunday at the Farnsworth Art Museum. "Andrew Wyeth: Maine Paintings," in the Hadlock Gallery, includes paintings in tempera, drybrush and watercolor about subjects such as the Allen and Benner Islands and the local St. George and Cushing areas. A second exhibit, also running through Oct. 27, will be held in the Wyeth Study Center: "Andrew Wyeth: WWI" features toy soldiers from Wyeth's youth that he used as inspiration for many childhood drawings in pencil and watercolor. The main museum and Wyeth Center are open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Columbus Day. Admission is $9 with discounts available and free to children under 18, museum members and Rockland residents.     'The Art that is Glass: Selections from the Greenberg Collection'

    Through December 15, Portland Museum of Art, 7 Congress Square, Portland

    Last year, longtime Portland residents Sylvia and Morris Greenberg bequeathed more than 250 pieces of art glass to the Portland Museum of Art. Accumulated over more than 40 years, the large collection included many pieces from the "golden age" of art glass, 1880-1910. Also included are many pieces the Greenbergs, longtime supporters of the PMA, donated during their lifetimes. The museum is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays through Columbus Day.     'Neo-Impressionism: Artists on the Edge'

    Through Oct. 20, Portland Museum of Art, 7 Congress Square, Portland

    Tiny dots and squares placed close together ("pointillism") are the signature of the Neo-Impressionist style originated by painter Georges Seurat in the mid-1880s. Opening today at the Portland Museum of Art, "Neo-Impressionism: Artists on the Edge," features more than 50 paintings, watercolors, prints and drawings by artists including Seurat and Paul Signac, as well as later artists who continued to be inspired by the movement such as Henri Martin and Ludovic de Vallée. The museum is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays.     'Kenneth Noland: Themes and Variations, 1958-2000'

    Sunday, June 30 - Oct. 13, Farnsworth Art Museum, 16 Museum St., Rockland

    Concentric circles filled with intense colors define the works of American artist Kenneth Noland, one of a group of artists whose style is often identified as "Post-Painterly Abstraction" or "Color Field Painting." Noland is the subject of a retrospective at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland beginning Sunday. The exhibit surveys major phases of Noland's career including "Circles" (1956-1962) and "Diamonds," (1964-1969). Also featured are works from Noland's most recent series, "Mysteries," (1999-present), many of which were created in Noland's studio in Port Clyde, Maine.
