The Most Awesome Camp on Earth!

Camp Titan is a camp/teaching facility/retreat center being built on the site of a former United States Air Force UNDERGROUND TITAN 1 ICBM MISSILE BASE, located in eastern Washington state.  This unique facility will provide kids with opportunities that exist no where else on earth.  What could be more awesome than learning to scuba dive in 100’ deep waters, complete with rocks, coral, live saltwater fish and other critters, and even a sunken treasure?  Or scaling a 150’ “cliff” in complete safety within the confines of the rock-climbing silo?  These are but two of the adventures made possible by 155’ deep missile silos that once housed 98’ tall Titan 1 rockets.  How about playing basketball or volleyball 50’ UNDERGROUND in the 8,000 square foot former command center?  Or swimming underground in a 12,000 square foot domed “living” swimming pool, populated with live freshwater fish, crustaceans and plants, and complete with its own island?  This will be possible by transforming the former powerhouse which once housed a 4 megawatt electrical generating plant.

There will be plenty of above-ground fun and adventure as well.  Kids will enjoy learning to be part of a team while playing soccer, baseball, field hockey or football on the large sports field.  Or they may prefer to sharpen their archery or tennis skills, or race to victory in the track-and-field events.  They can feel the thrill of the wind in their face while go-carting on the paved road surface where U.S. Marines once patrolled.  For the fishing enthusiast, there will be a fully stocked trout pond.  This and so much more.

These awesome adventures will take place in a setting that respects and promotes the natural environment, where wildlife such as deer, rabbits, owls, field mice, hawks and eagles will continue to have a home.  In this natural setting, as well as in the scuba silo and the freshwater swimming pool, kids will learn to appreciate, respect, and nurture the natural world in which we live.

Why make a camp out of a former missile base?

The existing structure of the Camp Titan facility will permit adventures and experiences that aren’t possible in a conventional above-ground camp.  The superstructure to make all of this possible already exists.

Kids are fascinated by this massive structure and excited about going underground.  For the last 33 years, kids have been breaking into the facility no matter how much security was in place.  They have been willing to risk a felony trespass conviction just to see the place.  So, in the spirit of “if you can’t beat them, join them,” let’s open the place up and invite the kids in, but in a way that is safe, fun, and inspiring.

  “Nature Friendly” Site Plan Completed

The site plan for Camp Titan has been completed.  The nationally recognized camp and retreat design firm of Harrison, Hempe and Davis of Ames, IA developed the plan.  There will be a total of 18 cabins in three separate “villages”, restroom/shower buildings, a headquarters/office building, staff housing, an informal grass field for games and events, Titan Park – containing paths, gardens, sitting areas, apparatus, lighting shelters and interpretive stations, along with increased parking and maintenance facilities.

The plan has been designed to make the entire complex “nature friendly”.  Care will be taken to plant vegetation and design habitat for the areas’ native wildlife.

INCREDIBLE CAMPS!

Action Camps!

At Camp Titan, kids are the number one priority.  Every person at Camp Titan is committed to providing a loving, accepting, kid-centered environment in which kids can grow, learn, and be challenged.  Through every activity and adventure, guided by caring and dedicated counselors and instructors, each camper will be encouraged to accept and overcome challenges, to recognize their God-given gifts and potential, and to develop strong moral values and principles.  Through activities such as swimming, skating, hiking, golf, go-carting, target practice, introduction to Tae Kwon Do, and track-and-field events, kids will be inspired to have a positive “can do” outlook no matter what challenges they face in life.  Through team sports such as basketball, soccer, baseball, field hockey, football, and games like capture the flag, kids will learn the importance of working as a team, and of encouraging and accepting others. Through fun and lively music, skits and stories,  “campfire” like gatherings and individual “cabin” get-togethers will emphasize positive moral values and a recognition and acceptance of each campers special and unique God-given gifts and potential.  Kids will leave Camp Titan knowing that they are special, unique, and loved and that there’s nothing they can’t do.  Each and every one of them can make a difference in the world.  THEY ARE AWESOME!

Titan Muscle –Work Camps!

Work is underway to bring in the “cabins”, and to remodel the silos, powerhouse, and command center.  Spots are still open for the “work” camps taking place in the summer of 2000.  If you would like to put your muscles (big or small) to work in completing Camp Titan, Register Now! and let us know when you’d like to come.  (Please note, registration for work camps is limited to those 13 years old and older).  Breakfast, lunch and dinner, a place to throw down your sleeping bag, and restroom facilities will be provided.   We’ll work half-day and then have fun the rest of the day doing all the stuff the kids in the action camps are doing.  (Read the Action Camp description above for more information.) After the sun goes down, we’ll enjoy singing around the campfire, playing table games, or telling spooky stories (ask about Skeleton Pigeon) as we explore the dark tunnels.  You’d never have thought work could be this fun!  Just look at some of the exciting things you can help do:
