What is Black & White Studios?

We are a satellite of Lionhead Studios, creators of the best-selling, multiple award-winning game Black & White. Black & White Studios was set up in July 2000 with many of the people who worked on the original Black & White title. We have added the best new talent in the industry to bolster the Studio, and the first title made by B&WS; (as itís shortened to) was the successful add-on Creature Isle.

What is Black & White Studios doing?

Our job is to concentrate on the entire Black & White series of games. Everything to do with Black & White Ė is handled by us. We are already working hard on Black & White 2, as well as being in the middle of creating Black & White: Next Generation, the all-new arcade-orientated Black & White game. B&W2; will be available for PC, and B&W;: NG is being written specifically for the major consoles. Black & White was always designed to be a long-term ambition, with the Black & White world developing as each new episode is created. B&WS; is turning this plan into reality.

Why is B&WS; separate from Lionhead Studios?

Lionhead Studios is currently developing a varied series of games, including Black & White Studios taking the Black & White series further. Part of the philosophy of Peter Molyneuxís Lionhead group of companies is to keep development within companies which retain their own culture and identity, and can concentrate on what theyíre best at - creating the best games possible. This means that Lionhead organises finance etc. Though B&WS; puts a little bit of space between itself and the teams developing other games all the teams act like consultants to each other.

The companies share resources and ideas. B&WS; not only uses the centralised Lionhead resources of the Sound & Music, Scriptwriting and Testing departments, but also to take care of the day-to-day financial and office administration tasks Ė leaving us to concentre solely on making great games.

Who are B&WS;?

The team is mainly comprised of programmers, artists and designers, some of whom worked on the original PC version of Black & White, plus hand-picked talent new to the company, brimming with skills and fresh ideas. The head of B&WS; is Jonty Barnes. He was the Senior Programmer on Black & White, and has worked with Peter Molyneux for nearly 15 years.

Is Peter Molyneux involved in Black & White Studios?

Yes. As mentioned previously, Peter and the rest of the Lionhead stable of development teams deliberately maintain a level of crossover, with everyone taking an interest in what everyone else is doing. When one creative team gets involved with what another team is doing, the result is almost always highly beneficial. Peter Molyneux has always been keenly interested in every element of game design, and his skills and his track record are second to none, so we welcome the large amount of input he gives Black & White Studios.

How far can the Black & White title go?

All our ideas are constantly being assessed and improved, and the Black & White series is like a living, growing thing. And of course ideas for Black & White are constantly being reaped from the bulletin boards

How can I work for B&WS;?

We often advertise jobs on this site, as well as in the press. Keep you eyes peeled, but donít contact us on spec. We only interview people for specific posts, so you have to be replying to an advert.

Iíve got some great ideas for how to improve Black & White. Can I tell you them?

Yes. A lot of the improvements and fresh ideas have come from the people we make the games for. You. So if you have a scorcher of an idea, the best place to tell us about it is the bulletin boards. We do spend time reading these, although we only post when we feel itís appropriate.
