The Hiawatha Wampum Belt commemorates the formation of the Iroquois League of Indian Nations in the 17th century. Wampum was the medium of exchange for commerce and trade. The use of the "wampum" symbol as a logo for the NTDA has been approved by the Oneida Nation on behalf of the Iroquois League Grand Council. The interconnected squares, linked to a central tree, signifies unity.
