"N" code Mustangs.

When we found the first "N01A", back in 1994, we thought first it was a stamping mistake on the VIN plate, not a rare thing. But soon, a second car was found, then a third, excluding totaly a stamping error. Actualy I know seven cars of this kind, but space between serial numbers let us think there is at least 45 cars.

A lot of people are interested by this subject, I get several answers, and by now I can tell you more about this. I have found the meaning of the "N" in a french original and official paper (1966 dated). This paper is the one you need first here when you built, or import a new car, in order to get the certificate, it contents all the features of the car, and prooves the car (or model) is safe and can go on the street. So, "N" means "assembled in netherland by Ford", I don't know exactly where was the plant, maybe Amsterdam. Cars were not built there, but only assembled, with spare parts from USA. I never found any infos about this in magazines or books, so I don't know how many were made.
Lately, I've found a 65 "N" code in Holland, and a 67 in Germany.

Here is a copy of an official article describing the VIN plates for french Mustangs:

  • 1 - For cars assembled and built by FORD USA:
a/ A VIN plate is located inside the left door, including names, serial number and codes identifying the mean parts of the car.
b/ A VIN plate is riveted on a body part in the engine compartment, incuding name, style, serial number and full autorized weight (PTAC).
c/ The serial number is striken onto the left inner fender panel, between the builder's marks.
d/ The consecutive unit number starts at 100 001.
The consecutive unit number will use numbers from 100 001, and will start again at 100 001 for the next model year.

For identification, serial number includes 11 digits, in the following order:
    1) One number for the model year.
    2) One letter for the assembly plant.
    3) Two numbers for the body style.
    4) One letter for the engine code.
    5) Six numbers for the consecutive unit number.

The consecutive unit number will use numbers from 10 001, and will start again at 10 001 for the next model year.
