POWER VISITS; RAND COMMITS TO IOWA
by Lou Somogyi, Associate Editor

Notre Dame’s chances of signing Iowa State transfer Shane Power, a 6-5, 210-pound wing from Crown Point, Ind., may have increased in recent days.

Power had planned to take an official visit to Wisconsin this past weekend, but the uncertainty of scholarship availability there led him to take an official visit to the Notre Dame campus instead. Earlier this spring, Power had visited Notre Dame in an unofficial capacity since the campus is approximately only 60 miles from his home. He had also taken official trips to New Mexico, Mississippi State, Virginia and Pittsburgh.

An honorable mention All-Big 12 pick this past season as a sophomore, Power could become Notre Dame’s third transfer signee in four years. Ryan Humphrey played the last two seasons with the Irish after beginning his career at Oklahoma, and 6-8 Dan Miller will suit up this year for Notre Dame after playing his first three seasons at Maryland.

With Miller and 6-6 Matt Carroll graduating after the 2002-03 campaign, Power could step into immediate action at a wing slot for the Irish after sitting out the 2002-03 season due to NCAA rules.

In other news, 6-6, 180-pound Ben Rand, who is completing his junior year at Rochelle (Ill.) High School, is supposed to announce his commitment to Steve Alford’s Iowa Hawkeyes program this morning, according to Rivals.com. Rand was one of the top wing prospects Notre Dame was recruiting in the high school ranks. Michigan State, Illinois, Boston College and North Carolina State also were ardently recruiting him.

Earlier this spring, Georgia’s 6-4 Tim Morris, who took an official visit to Notre Dame in May, committed to Stanford.
