Kathryn tried to sleep, but the rest of dreams continued to elude her. And she knew why. Her mind was worried and confused. Kathryn was beginning to think that her plan would fail. It had been hours and still the drone avoided their bed. Not even after the worst most grueling fight had Seven ever given her this much space. And it was a small tactic that was making the human very nervous.
And Kathryn wasn't unaware of her own mixed emotions on the fight they had just been through. But she couldn't let her mind go to that strange warm maternal place again. She had chosen the path of her life a long time ago. And the Borg had no right to change the course of her dreams, no matter what they were offering in return.
So with a defeated sigh Kathryn rose from the bed. The human knew that it was time to begin mending her fences with drone, especially if she had any hope of winning Seven's trust. Pulling on a warm white robe, to cover her less then modest nightgown, she wandered the upstairs hall looking for the missing Borg.
She didn't have to go far. She easily found Seven angrily working away in her office. Kathryn lurked at the doorway watching the drone's exaggerated and tense motions as she stormed around the room. She had seen Seven angry many times before.
But this time it was different. There was something there in Seven's eye that she had never quite seen before. And if Kathryn didn't know better, she would think that it was the presence of hurt. The human just didn't want to believe that was possible. She didn't want to believe that Seven had feelings that bruised just as easily as her own. If that were the case, it would make what Kathryn had do all the more difficult to carry out.
She could tell that Seven had detected her presence at the door. But the drone made no attempt to greet or invite her. And Kathryn knew this was also a rather bad sign. The drone was rude and surly. But she at least always greeted the human with a snide comment or a rude command. This all out total disregard of her presence was unsettling to Kathryn.
Deciding to confront her problem Kathryn invited herself into the drone's private office. She had never really spent much time in this room. The only time she had been in there before was to borrow the few books that Seven owned. And glancing around at her surroundings Kathryn knew without question that this was the last room she would ever want to lounge about in.
The entire room was brimming with wall to wall flashing Borg technology. And as she looked at the glowing panel that Seven was seated behind, Kathryn didn't recognize a single device in front of her. She couldn't imagine what the drone did with all the abundant towering equipment.
But still Seven ignored her. She had hovered behind the drone hoping that Seven would at least speak to her now. And Kathryn couldn't help but feel a bit uneasy around so much technology that she didn't understand, especially when Seven was so very infuriated with her.
"You didn't come to bed." Kathryn whispered deciding that all attempts at a truce would have to come from her. In the end, it was something was she comfortable with. After all, Seven would probably trust her more if she could visibly see how much Kathryn wanted them to get along.
"I am working." Seven snapped without bothering to look at her. Kathryn wished that at least the drone would face her. She thought that if Seven had to stare directly into her eyes that this casual disregard would somehow be more difficult for the drone.
"Do you plan to be long?" Kathryn asked pretending not to notice the angry tone the drone had used to address her.
"It is none of your concern." Seven answered still obviously very upset with the human. Kathryn had seen the drone display a wide variety of tempers while on board Voyager.
But this time Kathryn knew that she had pushed the drone to her limit. Kathryn had rejected her in a way that no sentient being deserved. And not even a Borg drone deserved the harsh words that the human had said in the heat of anger. She had attacked Seven on something even deeper then a personal level. She had told the Borg that her desire to procreate was nothing short of hideous.
And despite her plan that required garnering the drone's affection and trust, Kathryn wanted to smooth things over for other reasons. On some level she did still care for the drone. The naive Borg that she had marooned on Voyager still plagued her thoughts and rested in her heart. And it was because of that girl; it was because of Annika, that Kathryn felt a desperate need to apologize.
"Seven, for what it's worth, I am sorry. I shouldn't have said those things to you. You didn't deserve them. And I didn't mean them. I was just angry. But I apologize." Kathryn said speaking from a genuine place of sincerity.
Seven stiffened in her chair hearing the strange tone coming from the woman behind her. Kathryn was talking to her like she used to. She sounded like a woman apologizing to a friend.
And the drone was a bit taken aback by the sentiment. She hadn't been expecting it from Kathryn. But predicting human behavior had never been one of her many talents. Not certain that she should say anything; the drone let the human return to their bedroom. And it wasn't until she heard Kathryn softly close the door behind her did Seven let go of a breath she didn't even know that she had been holding.
She tried not to let her feelings get the better of her. After their rather ugly fight this evening Seven had nearly given up all hope on a future with the human. And she was devastated by the revelation.
She didn't just want a future with Kathryn. She wanted a family. She wanted to be Kathryn's friend, lover and lifetime mate. And she wanted to give the woman children. Seven felt her mechanical arm flex in response to her wistful thinking. She knew that any child she had with Kathryn would be beautiful. And desperately she wanted the woman to see that as well.
But after Kathryn's enraged reaction Seven had been cleanly shocked into reality. Kathryn could never love her. What hurt the most was that Seven knew at one time, Kathryn had shared her feelings. She just didn't understand why they couldn't give into what they both had wanted. On Voyager, with things like a perilous mission and Starfleet protocols coming between them, they never had a chance. But here, they could have everything they ever wanted. And yet the human kept making things so very difficult with her wide range of intense feelings.
Quickly, Seven sent a message to Dreyka's unimatrix that she needed to see the human. And within the span of seconds the drone had easily scheduled an appointment to meet with the human girl. Seven had to know if it was pointless with Kathryn. She had to know if her love for the human would always be one sided.
Deciding that enough time had finally elapsed and that Kathryn should definitely be asleep, Seven joined the human in their bed. She swiftly readied for bed taking care not to wake the woman. But when she slid under the sheets and reached for the regeneration controls, she could tell that Kathryn was still awake. Her breathing was uneven and ragged. Her small body was clenched in anxiety. And from the way she flipped over onto her side, Seven could tell that she was wanted to talk.
"I was beginning to think you were going to spend the night avoiding me." Kathryn mumbled moving her body so that she could easily face Seven. The drone nervously clenched her hand on top of her mechanical appendage.
The motion seemed strange coming from the Borg. Kathryn couldn't remember having ever seen Seven plagued with nerves. It was almost like the drone was trying to shrink away from her sight. And when Seven lowered her head in a defeated motion, Kathryn caught her own curious expression in the metallic eyepiece.
"Kathryn…do you really think I'm ugly?" Seven asked in a small voice. Kathryn thought she actually felt someone punch the air right out of her lungs. Mocking your enemies to the point of near tears wasn't something they taught at the academy. And Kathryn was feeling deeply shamed by her earlier words.
"No, Seven I don't. I was just angry." Kathryn answered trying to calm the drone. Not only did she deeply hurt the drone, but also Kathryn realized that she might have jeopardized her only way off the colony.
"What about this? Don't you think this is... how did you put it? Ah yes… a heinous display of cruelty." Seven asked still using a meek child like voice.
The human tried not to react as Seven moved her Borg appendage close to Kathryn. She tried not to move as it softly whirred and changed shapes right in front of her very eyes. It kept morphing and changing until finally it resembled a black-gloved fist, like the kind she had seen on the Borg Queen.
"No, Seven it's not ugly. It just… I… it frightens me." Kathryn explained hoping that Seven would accept her choppy attempts at an explanation.
And apparently it worked. Seven pulled her arm away staring at the human as if she was searching for something. Moments later, Seven kneeled across the bed quickly approaching Kathryn's body. The human remained still not sure what the drone intended to do. Kathryn realized that she was probably misreading the Borg's action, so she remained calm and impassive.
But a few seconds later, calm was the furthest thing from her mind and body. Because in a mere instant, Seven had pulled her smaller body against her much larger and stronger one. She had eagerly sought Kathryn's mouth with her own. And before the human knew what was happening, she was exchanging quite possibly the most passionate kiss of her entire life.
