COMMERCE AWARDS NEW CLIMATE AND WEATHER SUPERCOMPUTER CONTRACT TO IBM
NOAA announced that it awarded a contract to lease a new supercomputer from International Business Machines. The supercomputer's increased processing capabilities will enable NOAA to significantly improve weather, flood, ocean and climate forecasts for the country.

NOAA, NASA TO LAUNCH NEW ENVIRONMENTAL SATELLITE
A new environmental satellite, NOAA-M, is planned for launch June 24 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. The NOAA-M satellite will improve weather forecasting and monitor environmental events around the world.

RECENT RAINFALL EASES DROUGHT IN EAST
Throughout most of the parched East Coast, above-normal rainfall between March and May has helped ease drought conditions. Between 12 and 20 inches of rain fell on most of the Appalachians and Northeast from March through late May.

NOAA SAYS 6 TO 8 HURRICANES COULD THREATEN IN 2002
NOAA says the 2002 Atlantic hurricane season will likely have normal to slightly above normal levels of activity. The outlook calls for the potential of nine to thirteen tropical storms, with six to eight hurricanes, and two to three major hurricanes.
