U.S. President George Bush was greeted with catcalls, protest signs and ‘carols of dissent’ during his appearance at Chicago’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 16, sparking glares from political officials on the parade reviewing stand and outrage among Republican Party loyalists who had gathered to greet ‘Dubya’.
Saturday’s anti-shrub actions included caroling by a group of activists assembled under the moniker the ‘Chorus of Dissent’, as well as a contingent of anti-war cyclists and pockets of protesters waving anti-administration and anti-war signs and banners along the Columbus Drive parade route.
“We’re here to protest the illegitimacy of this presidency and the awful policies of this administration,” said one ‘Chorus’ member. “Bush’s war on terrorism is really a war to protect corporate power at the expense of free speech and human rights,” said another protester.
Protesters came armed with a sweeping array of banners and signs that denounced Bush’s ties to the Enron debacle, called on the Bush regime to free hundreds of mostly Arab and East Asian detainees, condemned the administration's 'war on terrorism', and -- in a nod to the St. Patrick’s day holiday spirit -- derided the Bush/Cheney/Ashcroft ‘Axis o’ Evil’.
One particularly visible and powerful sign was drawn to mimic the ‘These Colors Don’t Run’ logo that has sprouted up across the country -- and reframed to say ‘These colors don’t bleed -- the innocent do.’
Chorus of Dissent participants spent more than an hour at the main reviewing stand singing tunes that included ‘We Should Impeach the Bogus King’ (sung to the tune of ‘I’d like to teach the world to sing’), ‘Georgy, Georgy is a Fascist (sung to the tune of ‘Glory, Glory, Hallelujah’), and ‘The Shady Bunch’ (sung to the tune of ‘The Brady Bunch’).
Republican Party loyalists at the reviewing stand tried to drown out protesters by shouting them down, telling them to go back to Afghanistan, jeering the invocation of free speech rights, and chanting ‘U.S.A! U.S.A!’ as Bush disembarked from his limousine. Bush opponents were undeterred, and continued to sing and chant relatively unmolested after Bush and his entourage hastily left the area.
Protesters passed out literature that documented a host of legislation, policies and funding cuts the Bush administration has rammed through since Dubya took power that they argue hurts the environment, displaced workers, the working poor and others. Those policies include cutting $39 million in federal funding to libraries; cutting $35 million for doctors’ pediatric training; revoking rules to reduce arsenic in drinking water; cutting 50% from research into renewable energy; Bush’s abandonment of a campaign pledge to invest $100 million for rain forest conservation; cutting 86% from a program that funds care for people without insurance; cutting $200 million in work-force training for displaced workers; cutting $700 million in capital funds for public housing repairs; Bush’s closing of the White House Office for Women’s Health Initiatives & Outreach; Bush’s gutting of the White House AIDS Office; and the Bush regime’s refusal to fund continued clean-up of a uranium-slag heap in Utah.
Many parade attendees -- outside of irked Bush loyalists -- seemed to welcome the protesters’ message.
One woman stopped to talk to 'Chorus' participants and said, “I want to stand by you all. The war in Afghanistan is stupid and terrible, and it’s really good that you’ve come out here to speak out.”
Another man with his wife and child stopped to talk to the protesters when he saw a sign of Bush with his lips sewn shut and ‘Enron’ tattooed to his forehead. “Man, that Enron thing is really something, with all those people losing their pensions. I’m unemployed myself so it’s good unemployment benefits are going to be expanded, but these guys in Washington -- all they do is talk, talk, talk while the rest of us struggle.”

Glad to hear that you were able to "get through" to some at the parade. We've got to keep on speaking up, we are the people. There wasn't just a stolen election, we've been rolled over and stomped on, it's time to stand up and demand this government, whether Democrat or Republican comes back to the people, all the people, not just special interests.

Prior to 9-11 there were plans to include kazoo bands at protests, to mock W. with the dippy sounds only kazoos can make. "O-oh yes, I'm the Great Pretender" on a kazoo......can't you just hear it?
So get kazoos when you head out to protest. They're cheap! Anyone can play them! Kazoo orchestras are a long tradition in street theatre. Chase the Great Pretender from town to town with the haunting strains of M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E or even the Chicken Dance!

The AM dial and the corporate media are awful.
As an antidote, I listen to some internet radio talk shows that make sense.
The first show is called Conversations and you can find it at www.radioleft.com. It's on from 3 to 4 CST daily.
The second is the Joe Allen show at http://www.democraticlibnetwork.com/
You'll find archived shows and details about listening there.

In all the media coverage I saw of Bush in Chicago I didn't see or hear anything about any protesters.
Guess they didn't think they were worth mentioning.
Of course with 90% plus national approval rating for Bush on the war, I suppose anti-war protest is seen as coming from the insignificant fringe anyway.

Considering the source of this information, I would tend to take it with a grain of salt.............I know........ I was at the parade and there were no LARGE, ORGANIZED protests.....sure, you had the usual handful of detractors and morons, looking for a spot on the 10:00 news, a few hand lettered signs here and there....no big deal.
My daughter lives downtown - State St. - and I was down there, all over, several hours before the parade started, and there was NOTHING like this loser is trying to portray, going on during the congregation of parade viewers. By and large, everyone there was THRILLED to have President Bush in our midst, and everyone I saw let him know it!!!!

Yes there *were* protesters at the parade. One thing you have to remember is that many people were turned off by the security for Bush. We saw people getting out of line, and some people didn't even get into the parade on time. But we were there, and we had people joining in the singing and taking literature. There were also other people protesting besides us. Remember, the Bush supporters were the most likely to put up with the security checks, which dampened the spirit of the parade for a lot of people. I also think that the media exaggerated the numbers of people attending the parade. They also said slanted shit like, "Chicago welcomes Bush" "Chicago is so excited about Bush", as if everyone who came out to specifically champion Bush somehow represented Chicago, which is not exactly a Republican bastion. There were a lot of union people at the parade - I don't think they were too happy about the distraction caused by Bush.
One woman yelled at me, "90% of the people here are Republicans, what are you doing here?" At any other event in Chicago, such a number would seem quite strange. How could someone make such a claim and believe it unless they specifically came in from the Republican suburbs to support Bush?
We weren't trying to get on the news - if they had gotten us, well...*good*, but more importantly, we got to meet some people and talk to people and create a dissenting presence at the parade. What's more is that we had lots of fun and many of us are motivated to do it again.

If the media will not cover your protest then send them your protest signs! Flood them with your protest signs in the US mail. Make protest signs on pillowcases and send them hundreds of them. Send them before Caligula on the Potomac gets to town just in time for him to get there.
The media will get the message that even though you get pushed into so called first amendment zones out of media coverage that they will get your signs and your message about Caligula (GW BUHSH)
If you do get to protest near Caligula then make cloth signs which you can hide under your clothes.
I agree that kazoos will work especially when Caligula gets near, then razz him with them.
BUCK FUSH!
If you really want to protest Bush and not worry about first amendment zones and police and freepers, close your wallets to the contributors to the Republican Party. Hit them in their pocket book. You can then protest from your living room. See my web page. go.to/bushsucks

Chicago trip a glimpse of 2004 Bush strategy
March 16, 2002 Posted: 10:05 PM EST (0305 GMT)
CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) -- To cheers and applause, President Bush marched in Chicago's St. Patrick's Day parade Saturday -- part of a road trip analysts said could have some political benefits.
The first sitting president to walk in this city's St. Patrick's Day parade, Bush made the trip to honor Irish-Americans, who greeted him warmly throughout the parade route.
Political pundits, however, saw it as another example of how the administration has made courting Roman Catholics a huge priority.
"This is a classic case of ethnic politics -- the president telling Irish Catholics that he recognizes them, he appreciates them, he values them and, subtly, he wants their votes," said Stu Rothenberg, a political analyst based in Washington.
The courting of the Catholic vote makes sense in the context of the 2000 presidential election.
In that contest, Bush narrowly lost the Catholic vote to Democratic rival Al Gore. That was a significant achievement because, when it came to the Catholic vote, Bill Clinton beat former Sen. Bob Dole by 16 points in 1996.
Catholics could be key for the president, Republicans say, especially because Bush did not win the popular vote.
"This president must obviously put down a wider, deeper base of support than what he had in 2000, or he may not be re-elected," said Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Nebraska. "He certainly understands that."
The president's recent travel schedule suggests he has not forgotten the 2000 election, the closest in modern history. This year alone, Bush has been to Florida -- the state which decided the presidential race -- three times.
His trips have also focused on states he narrowly lost or states he won by six points or fewer in 2000.
Bush is also going to places to boost Republican chances in the 2002 elections, raising money for Elizabeth Dole, a Senate candidate in North Carolina, and helping governors, such as his brother Jeb in Florida, hold onto their jobs in November.
All this activity underscores one point: The president's advisers know that if Republicans lose control of the House and fail to regain control of the Senate, Bush will face an uphill battle getting his agenda passed -- and scoring legislative and policy victories to tout in 2004.

It is about time we started to examine this presidency more carefully. Supporting America in her time of need and supporting an ignorant, illegitimate president are two entirely different things.
GWB is bad for working Americans, the environment, public schools, women, energy conservation and most other people who are not oil magnates. Like his bovine Dad, I hope its four and no more.

according to most polls, bush is in the low 80% or mid to high 70% of approval rating for his job, steadily (if slowly) dropping since 9-11. zogby in fact has his approval at a mere 74%...interesting, considering that bill clinton was in the 60% range of approval at the height of the impeachment proceedings. please go to this web address for a compilation of most polls:
http://pollingreport.com/BushJob.htm
and always remember, the corporate media use polls, because it's easier than researching and investigating facts. i have a theory that the very nature of polls (ie, the idea that the nuance and depth of human thought can be reduced to a binomal yes/not yes result) itself makes the polls skew to the right.

How ready are ordinary working class Americans to show, loud and clear, their dissent with Shrub and his band of radical right wing pimps? Are most people scared of speaking up? Is it because most white working class folks from the sticks do not identify with the leading voices of dissent? If the so-called liberal lawmakers in Washington and all 50 state capitals crafted a message and hammered it home to "their constituents", then maybe we, as American people, can free ourselves from the fall into this democratic feudalism the psycho right has every intention of imposing on the U.S.A. in the Twentfirst Century.
Thank You

What can he understand?
Just hear the cackles of his shills:
"We'll fleece throughout this land."
That's the song you'll hear...
Let the world see today...
Sleaze from Bush on display...
It's so very clear.
